Authentic, nice and small

The museum honours the seafaring history of Rauma. The displays are interesting and genuine, and the highlight is taking a ship into Rauma port on a simulator.

Stylish collection of ship models and equipment
Jul 2019
We are not sailors ourselves, so visited this just out of interest to see what might be there. It is well set up in a compact house with two and a half floors. Interesting equipment on the first floor, some art work on second and third. A pretty cafe and small shop. A short distance from old Rauma, but enough so that the place was almost empty in July. Very friendly staff.

Great chance to have a proper look on historic articles related to sea and well put together commentary with lots of cool stuff for kids like a boat simulator. Worth having a Look! Changed my mind about museums being boring.

Interesting museum
Aug 2019
Rauma Maritime Museum was opened in 2004 in the former Maritime School which is a beautiful old building from 1900.

The sea and seafaring have always been important to this third-oldest town in Finland. The exhibitions show interestingly the rich seafaring traditions in Rauma.

You can use your own smartphone or tablet as a mobile guide.

Also, museum guests can now test the new navigation simulator JENNY II.

This is a museum of its kind. The region naturally has along history of maritime activities and the museum offers a rich glimpse of olden times. You have different kinds of ships, boats, the eqipment used by the sailors and the navy and film running on those. This definitely is a place for those with special interest in maritime activities and history of the techniques. The museum also has a small shop selling souvenirs.

Not only for the ship enthusiasts!

Rauma's maritime museum is very well curated and full of fascinating and unusual exhibits. The simulator rightly gets a lot of positive attention, but I liked some of the quirkier exhibits such as the poster demonstrating various ways of dealing with a drunken sailor, the old video of a crossing the Arctic Circle 'baptism', and the collection of items that were found on wrecks. Little details like the sign in the upstairs toilet also made my visit special. It's well worth the walk from the Old Town.

The maritime museum for the whole family

This is an interesting museum about shipping and navigation. There is something for everybody there. Our teens loved the navigation simulator Jenny. I loved the ballast park behind the museum building. The park is planted with ballast plant species found in Satakunta Province.

Curious

A good museum full of interactive displays that makes the maritime history spring into life. We've especially enjoyed the cruise simulator. The staff was helpful and pleasant. The only thing I missed was for the interactive parts to be translated into English, many are in Finnish only, not taking the tourists into consideration.

Maritime history without the dust
Jun 2015 • Solo
This is how to keep an aging museum up to date. A great many museums have dusty exhibits in glass cases and Rauma is no different but here the difference is that there are many interactive items for young and old alike.

This museum is not in the 'old town' but close to the center but easily missed. Its not a huge building and can be taken in it around an hour but its very interesting and well presented.
