Lovely and lively, at least on a summer Saturday. Great shops, good food, friendly service. Adorable wooden quarters and cobblestone streets.

A great piece of history, some really nice houses here. Nice for a walk combined with a cup of coffee or lunch.

Living history
Jul 2019
Old Rauma is a world hetirage site that is very much alive today, people live in the old wooden houses. Lots and lots of boutiques and shops, rather touristic but what else can you expect. Nice to stroll down the old streets. I warmly recommend the guided tour. The old church and the museums (Kirstin talo showing how ordinary people lived, and Marela where the patron's family lived) are well worth visits as well. Staying overnight is recommended, so you have time to visit them all.

Quaint capsule of the past.

An old Nordic City constructed in wood Old Rauma, a UNESCO Heritage Site, has a charm and peace which is pleasing.
Oddly, the Church, now Lutheran, about which the town was built, displays wall paintings depicting biblical stories in true “Catholic” manner. In addition there are more recent adornments which do seem odd, though interesting, in a Lutheran Church.
Beyond the Church is the town of Old Rauma, narrow cobbled streets sided by wooden buildings painted in a variety of colours.
It is worth visiting the Marcela House Museum which tells the story of Gabriel Granlund, a wealthy shipowner, and his family at the end of the 19th Century. A fascinating little museum.
Pottering about the streets and alleyways one loses the sense of haste and stress of the modern world. A delight.

Stunning World Heritage Town
Aug 2019
Old Rauma is a unique example of an old Nordic wooden town. Only the medieval church, the town hall and a couple of private houses are not wooden.

Most buildings got their present Neo-Renaissance appearance in the 1890s when the golden age of seafaring brought money for construction work.

Old Rauma was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991.

Don't forget the museums
Jun 2019
Our family friends live literally a block from Old Rauma so we had plenty of time to explore while visiting for several days. While it is nice to wander about, I highly recommend you stop by the visitors center on the central market square and pick up the walking map and buy the very reasonably priced ticket that covers the three museums along the way: History of Rauma (located in the floors above the visitors center), Marela (the ship owner's house) and Kirsti (a very old house that one family owned for over 200 years). All are historically interesting

Stunning
Aug 2019 • Couples
The old village is kept pretty much intact, but not artificially. It really just hasn't changed. People still live here, work here, eat here.

The houses are beautiful, colorful and well kept despite the harsh winters.

Walking along the streets, going into small alleys, makes you see the way they used to live here.

A must visit

Short visit to old Rauma
Jul 2019 • Family
Old Rauma is an area of old wooden houses, narrow streets and lovely atmosphere. Definitely worth to see even if you’re only passing through Rauma. I love the atmosphere and architecture.

The area of old Rauma is easily covered by foot, but cars are also welcome, and you can find parking places inside the area. Just bear in mind that the streets are only one way streets for cars.

You can find lovely little boutiques and small cafes here. Also, there are many choices for restaurants. You can even find a sushi and a nepalese restaurant here, and they both seemed to be quite popular. The boutiques offer many brands (especially Finnish ones) that are hard to find in bigger cities in Finland. We visited two cafes, and both were lovely and served delicious things. It’s all about the atmosphere. You should check the opening times, if you plan to visit the boutiques, cafes or restaurants since many of them are closed on Sundays and on other days they may not be open as long as you might think.

A very nice walk
May 2019 • Couples
It was a walk among the hundreds of houses with different architecture. Different, small but very beautiful houses. Many of them are inhabited. It is very good that such a place remembers the past.
