The oldest Finnish Bible from 1642
Jul 2020
This neo-gothic church of Loviisa was built in 1863-1865. It is very impressive, I think. The church itself is old but there are even older sights in the church, e.g. the first complete Finnish Bible which was written in 1642. The height of the church is 54 metres. The cross alone is 4 metres tall. The park is very nice, too, I think.

Church in the middle of the street.
Aug 2018 • Couples
If you are approaching from Helsinki, suddenly this church arises in the front of you, basically street is divided in two going both sides of the church, but later traffic is being guided only on one side.
The Church was built 1865 to replace previously burnt one. It has been built in traditional cross shape and in gothic style.
It is also presents true recycling, as bricks are from close by Svartholm sea fortress, bells are the first church of Loviisa 18th century. Several other items are from old burnt church and other defunct churches from area.

Impressed by its size compared to the village
May 2018 • Couples
The church is the first thing that you would bump on when arriving by the road.
I have been more surprised by the ratio of the church compared to the size of Loviissa.
I am not a huge fan of churches and Nordic ones are usually much less impressive compared with the one that you would see in the Southern Europe.

Worth a 10 minutes detour, but that’s it !

This big and beautiful redbrick church is located next to Loviisa market place. Parking place is just next to church, so easily reached by car too.

In winter, it is difficult to visit the cities, because many places are closed...
... of course churches are open on sunday during the Mass

Lovely church
Sep 2016 • Couples
The view of the church is best from the small green just to the south of the church and across the street. We did a walking loop from the central green to the fortress ruin, down past the marina to the beach and back through the forest on the ridge, the trail ends with a lovely view of the church. The forest was really beautiful and peaceful in the afternoon sun. At the southern end of the forest (opposite end from church) there is a spectacular 3-story lookout platform. Lovely views from there!

Loviisa landmark
Jun 2016 • Solo
This is the landmark of Loviisa. The old main highway 7 almost runs through the church. If you like churches or visit Loviisa in any case definitely worth stopping by. Very typical church in Finland.

Just a rush visit
Jun 2015 • Solo
On the way down to Kotka, I was on the coach that took the motorway, so I didn't manage to get a glimpse of the church. However, I took the slow coach back from Broby/Siltakyla and when the driver said that there would be a 15 minute break and Loviisa, I virtually ran to the church and ran back.

It is so utterly impressive. I can't concur with a previous description of the church as "cosy". It's blooming huge!

Unfortunately I had no time even to look at the imprints of bottoms in the seats of the pews, just time for a glance and then a rush back. One of these days I'll spend a night here and look at all the attractions properly, something I have not done for 20 years!

This is worth a good look round. From the outside, the way the church towers over the entrance to the town is overpowering, but in a good way.
