- Juhani KRiihimaki, Finland20 contributionsI am sailingVery modern museum about boats and ships. There is quite good sample of finnish boatbuilding skills and how shipping evolved to this day. All those different kind of exhibitions are also very interesting. So, if you are interested in how people sail around the world and close to the coast, go to the Maritime museum. There is also stories about the history of the Kotka region.Visited July 2020Written 8 July 2020
- Madeline-Elena VKerava, Finland110 contributionsA big surpriseFor a Finnish museum this is quite big and there are loads of things to see. Personally I am not at all interrested in boats and such but this museum was still interresting and if you are into maritime stuff I am sure this will be great. I wanted to visit because I wanted to see the seamonster exhibition but that wasn't really very good.Visited July 2020Written 31 July 2020

It is also rather cramped but that should not be a surprise. The exhibitions in the museum were well organized and interesting. There is also lots to see for kids.Visited July 2020Written 30 July 2020

The exhibitions are done really well. They had the Pompeii and Kohtalona Ruotsinsalmi when we visited. The sounds were exceptionally well made in the exhibitions. The staff and the guides are super helpful and kind.

Visited the Vellamo for the first time. The main reason for the visit was the "Escape from Pompeii" exhibition which was very good.
Also the permanent exhibitions were interesting.

Especially the Ruotsinsalmen taistelut -section was superb. Also the ice-breaker Tarmo is worth checking. There are so much to see in the whole place that it is better to reserve at least 3 hours for the visit.

New Fateful Svenksund exhibition was great, have to give 5/5 points for team who have done this modern exhibition! Loved the interactive map table, several items from the wreck and how exhibition was built up like under the see.
Vellamo is also filled with excellent Basic exhibition and building itself it sight too.
If you are in to sea, boats and ships - prepair to spend several hours here.
