- Freya JDen Helder, The Netherlands395 contributionsNice to walk over it.Just enter a market, with food products and some souvenirs on the floor above. Nice to have walked over it once. It looks neat and fresh. The market also has dining options. Please note, these are quite full around lunch time, so if you want to have lunch there, you have to get there early.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 January 2024
- GreyatEGKrakow, Poland65 contributionsNice. But not at noon.nice place, but overcrowded. Its hard to find a spot for eating anything what they sell. Anyway if you go there not in the middle of a day f.e early in the morning - You may be lucky to seat and it or drink.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 30 January 2024
- mas1604Busto Arsizio, Italy1,638 contributionsPa kroken: top!Beautiful market! Warm, welcoming, full of every Finnish meat or fish specialty. We opted for Pa Kroken: 2 oysters, 1 caviar, 2 salmon and whitefish croutons. Two liters of beer and lots of fun. Special service. All very well. Mandatory stop.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 15 April 2024
- SopiNepiKawasaki, Japan9,192 contributionsJust above the Metro station. There are restaurants on the first floor and souvenir shops on the second. While I was in Helsinki this time, I stopped by two marketplaces. This is just outside Hakaniemi Metro Station. I dropped by on my way back from Marimekko. The first floor is mainly lined with restaurants, while the second floor is lined with craft shops and souvenir shops. The swanky brick walls and narrow aisles of shops remain the same, but here it was a bit quieter and calmer. Maybe it's because it's in the city rather than the old market, which is such a tourist destination... When it comes to food and drink, there are similar restaurants, so you should go one way or the other. By the way, I prefer the slightly noisy Old Market. The port and outdoor market are close by. By the way, it was an important point of transportation, we took the Metro to Marimekko, and at this station we changed trains to Arabia.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 June 2024
- Thomas VOakland, California18,957 contributionsSee What is AvailableLoved going in here to look at the displays of foods of all sorts. Good time of year as the summer harvest had started. We did not buy anything as we were in town for only one day, but great fun to see what was available.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 July 2024
- YYC_wayfarer131 contributionsWonderful bustling market areaThis is a really neat place. It is fairly new to Helsinki as I understand it but it has become very popular quickly. There are dozens of stalls where you can vie with the locals to get what you need from fresh produce, fish, meat, cheese, bread, sweets and tea/coffee. We were there probably every other day for coffee and a small bite before setting out to explore. Highly recommend making a visit here. The nearest tram stop is a minute away also called Hakaniemi.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 8 November 2024

The renovation of the old red brick Market Hall will take yet another year so customers can still enjoy the airy and stylish building cube next to it. Here all shops are on the same level - fish, meat, bread, vegetables, vintage, handicrafts and many cafes. Some shopkeepers with tourist oriented products are not sure if they want to return upstairs in the old building, too hidden from view as all the food is sold downstairs. At least many speciality shops have managed to stay open even now.

Ever since, at least a quarter of a century ago, a French friend who had moved to Finland had introduced it to me and recommended it, Hakannirmi's kauppahalli had become my fixed point of reference for purchasing food and drinks to bring back home to Italy with the next afternoon or morning flight. All that goodness that was found in the many stalls had no equal in other covered markets and successfully rivaled the large supermarkets. Spending 2-300 euros had become a habit, which I didn't want to give up even on this new trip. Except that, upon entering, I found it much changed: new, with larger spaces between one stand and another, more foreign delicatessen shops and fewer Finnish products. What a disappointment! I then read that the building was the subject, a few years ago, of a long and profound renovation work, which perhaps made it more attractive to tourists (but I saw very few of them here: it remains a place frequented essentially by locals) but it impoverished him in other respects. Yes, there are a couple of stalls selling reindeer and elk meat, a couple of fresh and smoked fish, others with berry jams or typical bread, but the offer has greatly reduced since my last visit, seven years ago. I had to make do, and among other things I no longer found almost any trace of those magnificent arctic berry liqueurs (lakka, mesimarja, tyrni, puolukka, karpalo, pihlaja...) which in the past delighted me and others many friends in Florentine evenings where I cured the nostalgia of long stays in these latitudes. Sin. The fact remains that the building is interesting and, if you land nearby, unmissable. Unfortunately, the standardization produced by globalization has also caused and is causing disasters in Finland. Bad temporary weather...

We came here after going to the Old Market Hall, so found this place more modern, brighter, fewer tourists (so less crowded), not as many eateries, and seems a bit more expensive.
We tried both the pumpkin soup and salmon soup at the Soup + More. The salmon soup was of a clear tomato base, which was about different from the other salmon soup I've had in Finland, but still very nice. A bowl of soup with the bread that came with it was enough for lunch.

Was passing by, went in and had a look around. Nice and small booths with different merchandises such as coffee, soups, sandwiches, baked goods and so on. I had a coffee and a Gluten-free Shrovetide bun with jam and cream. Tasted fluffy and juicy, despite it being made without gluten.

Must visit! Lots of local shops selling meats, cheeses, confitures, desserts, sandwiches, florwers, vegetables, cafes etc... all this is on the lower level. On the 2nd floor are lovely craft shops, knick -knacs, antiques and vintage stuff, a few nice design stores including marimekko and art by cork.. all very lovely.

The picture is from the children's playground which is located under the Hakaniemi open air market! Unfortunately, I don't have a current picture of the beautiful old market hall. Anyway, this is the place where locals go shopping for groceries, fresh meat from the butcher, french cheese, fresh bread from the bakery and so on. Upstairs is a coffee shop where Helsinkians meet to have a conversation on their local slang.

You could still find a real market in Helsinki with flowers, fish kiosks, vegetable kiosks, and the hall has everything you ever could eat, you might like to buy great food, prepared to finish or for you to finish, cafes, gifts, flowers, ...

It is a rather small food market with various stalls. It is adjacent to the flea market with a multitude of vendors selling a lot of used stuff and collectibles.

Had been to the old market before but that is in the process of being renovated so transferred to a temporary home. Lots of local arts and crafts and fresh foods. A few places to eat and drink. We went to Kalaliike Marja Natti for the smoked salmon sandwich and a drink. Huge sandwich with great smoked salmon.

If you don't mind elbow room only this go here, this place is amazing. They crammed so much in such a tiny place, there is so many people in here and they have small cafe's that you can sit at but again elbow room only, if you are used to that then go for it, but if you are someone that is claustrophobic this is not the place to visit. Cool little coffee shops and cafe's

Hi, there is a mistake - I wanted to give 5 stars overall not 1 - but it seems almost impossible to edit this review (I am trying). I am VERY sorry as I am extremely happy with everything :-)
