The design district is an area of inner city Helsinki with a high concentration of shops, museums, bars, cafes and hotels with a particular emphasis on Finnish design. You can pick up a map of the area at most participating venues (or go online). We picked our map up at the Design Museum We used it to find some interesting... More

Helsinki is divided into districts and one of them is the Design district. Some great retail outlets and cafes to escape into from the cold days of winter.

You can spend quite some time shopping fine Finnish design in this area. We especially liked the Iittala shop on the Boulevard where you this year (2017) can buy a special centenary edition with among other Aalto glasses.

I knew I wanted to go see the Design District as soon as I read about it. Now, I am by no means an artist or designer myself, but I appreciate the Scandinavian/Nordic aesthetic and aspire to incorporate it into my own life in small ways. We walked around the many shops after spending some time in the Design Museum.... More

Would not highly recommend this area unless you're spending time at the nearby Design Museum. The design shops are a good number but spread far apart. Good records shops around though.

Helsinki is the center of Finnish design, so I really wanted to have a look at the shops. I found the Finnish design beautiful and timeless, but also very expensive. Even so I managed to buy some lovely home decorations for less then € 10. I liked the Punavuori neighbourhood, more or less the heart of the design district. it... More

We knew about the design district before our trip and headed there right from our bus. While there are plenty of design houses and design businesses, many with window displays, the retail aspect was weak. Retail is quite spread out and underwhelming. There's a lot of walking and the few places we went were also very expensive. We soon moved... More

In the Design District is also the Design Museum and the Museum of Finnish Architecture. Visit and get a deeper view of Finnish design and architecture over the years.Located just south of the centre, it stretches across 25 streets and includes more than 100 points of interest, from shops and galleries to design studios and hotels. Look up a map... More

Different types of shops are clustered in different areas, so be sure to check a design district map before you head out. The Finns have a great colourful scandi design aesthetic that I would highly recommend!
