At the large Senate square you not only find the Senate building, also the Palace of the Prime minister, the Dom Cathedral, as well as the main building of The Helsinki University and the Sederholm house, Bock House and the lovely Havis Amanda Statue.

The Senate Building does together with the Cathedral and other buildings surround the Senat Square. It is a large building in yellow/white and the construction started in 1818 and in 1822 the senat moved in. Other parts were opened in 1824 and 1828.
Today it houses The Prime Minister Office, Justice Department and parts of the Finance Department.
It is a very nice building to take a foto of.

A nice building in a nice square. You can’t enter it though so you can just observe it from the outside.

This is one of the oldest buildings in Senate Square, indeed from which the square takes its name. Beautiful in the summer sunshine with its golden hue, it acts as a focal point for the square and indeed the city, along with the famous Cathedral.

One of the oldest building located in Senate square. A truly majestic architecture and a center point for people and tourists to assemble. Nearby is the Helsinki white cathedral building.

The buildings in Senate Square, the oldest part of Helsinki are impressive and include the senate Building, the Cathedral and the University and the oldest dates back to 1757. This is the most impressive location in Helsinki and the senate building contrasts nicely with the white Cathedral opposite. You will find the square behind the Market Square and City Hall.

Probably most interesting is the architecture of this building. It is worth looking at it but I would not take a special effort to see it.

Part of the German architect C.L.Engel's neoclassical plan in pastel Empire colours for central Helsinki the palace has given the name for the whole square. The style was influenced by buildings in the early 19th century in nearby St.Petersburg, where he also worked as well as in Tallinn. Only persons working for the state administration have access inside the large palace occupying the whole lot.

The Senate Building is also known as Finland’s Government Palace. The building has beautiful large pillars, stairways, large rooms, an impressive and luxurious presidential meeting room with many marble pillars and paintings likely of past leaders/rulers, many relatively common type office and meeting rooms, and more. Relative to other government head offices I’ve seen around the world, I’d say that 50% of them are more impressive, although not necessarily larger. Thus, overall, I’ll rate this as “Average” and not a “Must See.” That said, most people only take an exterior photo, and from a sightseers viewpoint, there are better attractions to spend your time at.

Interesting building - also because it is part of Senate Square right next to Helsinki Cathedral, right in the centre..
