When the Ulrika Eleonora Church was demolished for the future site of Senate Square to build the Helsinki Cathedral the Old Church was constructed in 1826. All the plans were by the architect C.L. Engel himself, creator of the Neo Classical city center resembling St.Petersburg so much it has been used in Hollywood films. Built from heavy wooden logs after the Czar's orders most of the interior was moved from Ulrika Eleonora like the pulpit with gilded decorations dating back to 1726. A grander organ was later ordered and the plain cross substituted with Robert Ekman's altarpiece. Though the church was aimed to be temporary it is now the oldest in Helsinki and hasn't luckily never been burnt down.

A beautiful wooden church, the oldest in Helsinki. Set in a beautiful park. Well worth a visit if you have time. Very near this church, there is the memorial to Elias Lonnrot, who compiled the national epic, "Kalevala". Both the church and the memorial (and the park itself) are quite photogenic.

This small and simple, yet beautiful neo-classic gem is often forgotten or overlooked. Originally built as a temporary structure, it is still in use and an important part of the history of Helsinki.

The church is surrounded by an old cemetery, now-a-days a small green park much liked by locals in the summertime. The park is also very beautiful.

The area close to the park and the church is also very interesting: plenty of unique shops and restaurants here on very nice streets.

We had bought two best category tickets for a Christmas Concert by Helsinki Baroque Orchestra.

When all had finally got seated, the end result was that we had seats for just 1½ persons, although we came 30 minutes before the start of the concert and are average size persons.

It was pure torture to sit one hour in that cramped space. When the intermission finally started, I left and gave my space to my partner.

I wonder if the safety regulations for the maximum capacity for people were followed.

The church itself is a very charming and popular wedding church.

The beautyfull Vanha Kirkko or the old church is located centrally in Helsinki at the Bulevardi in the Old Church Park.
It does look smal but do have seating for about 1200 people.
The church is white and build in wood.
The construction started in 1820 and was completed in 1826 by Carl Ludwig Engel.
It was open and we did go in, what a brigth and smiling church , white and friendly.
The church is very popular for weddings in Helsinki and the acoustics is great for concert which are held there. The church do have a elevator for disabled people but you need to contact the church first. .

This church has an understated beauty. The combination of blue and white and its neoclassical style give it a clean and uncluttered feel. Built in the early part of the 19th c it was built as a temporary church as the original church had become to small. However the rapidly increasing population meant the church would still be needed. It is a Lutheran church and anyone with a religious, historical or architectural interest will want to spend a bit of time here.

One of the oldest churches in the metropolitan area. It's a lovely little wooden empire church in the heart of the park.

This little wooden church is well worth a visit. It’s near the city centre and is still a working church. Interesting detail in that women used to sit on the left and there are hooks on the back of the pews to hand their handbags and the men sit on the right and there are pegs to hang their hats and walking sticks.
