This statue is quite easily spotted from vicinity of the central station and stockmann department store. Conveys respect to the common people, that work pays off and needs utmost respect. For us tourists, a photo op would be nice.

This statue depicts three blacksmiths going about their work each with a hammer in hand bashing a hot bar into shape on an anvil. It sits upon a terracotta base with a few steps with the three men carved from green stone. Why the men are naked I’m not quite sure.

You will find this statue in the middle of the downtown shopping area and in front of a major hotel. We were wandering, looking for lunch when we came upon it. Three workers up on a pedestal, very well executed.

I felt for these naked guys in the cold weather during a cold spring day walking around the city. Someone had wrapped a scarf around the neck of one of blacksmiths.

A perfect spot for a picture! It can sound strange but it is the statue I will remember the most about my finnish trip!

This stunning bronze statue with a granite pedestal is located in the Three Smiths Square at the intersection of Aleksanterinkatu and Mannerheimintie next to the Stockmann department store.

The statue is made by Felix Nylund and it was unveiled in 1932. It depicts three naked smiths hammering on an anvil.

This 1932 popular bronze and granite statue by Felix Nylund is a popular meeting point for people in Helsinki. The popular Hard Rock Café is right behind it. The statue is hard to miss as it is on a corner of several roads.

Obviously, the meaning of this statue is left to each individual. Some believe it symbolizes the cooperation of people and human labor. It was damaged during WWII by the Russians. On the base you can still see some of this damage.

The Three Smiths and the Sibelius Monuments are, indeed, arguably the most recognized statues in Helsinki. It is worthy of any effort to see The Three Smiths.

Created by Felix Nylund it was unveiled in 1932. It is the the center piece of the square by the same name. It is simply three naked smiths hammering on an anvil. It is a local meeting place and a great conversation piece. The statue is bronze and mounted on a granite base and was donated by the Pro Helsingfors Foundation. The sculpture still shows damage both to the base and to the anvil sustained in 1944 during the Continuation War with the Soviet Union.

Although its one of the most popular meeting places and things to see in Helsinki, I had to dig a bit as to why it was commissioned. The sculptor entered a contest for a memorial to J.W. Snellman - a philosophy professor who was limited by the then government. The `Three smiths' has been interpreted to symbolize, for instance, human labour and cooperation between people. Its a great work of art, prominently positioned a short walk from the train station. The fact that the smiths are naked and it was a memorial to a philosophy professor makes me wonder what Freud would say?

This sculpture is near the Hard Rock Cafe and across the street from the entrance to Stockmann department store that has the clock. Our guidebook said that it was open to interpretation and that it showed the importance of hard work, working together and the character of the Finns. I can see all of that. What is also interesting is that the base shows bullet damage from World War II, when the Soviets tried to retake Finland, which had gained its independence during World War I. Interesting detail to find.
