Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a delightful little park in the bohemian area of Kallio. It's well kept with a couple of cafes, kiosks and shops in and around it as well as a tram stop. I was last here visiting friends a couple of weeks ago and realised that I have stayed before in the FinnApartments round the corner, so I know the park well.

In the summer, people come out to enjoy the air and the sun, especially on the part uphill and right from the tram stop.

I'm not going to say anyone should make a special visit here, but if you're in the area, it's worth a visit for a quiet sit-down and a look at the statue of the bear from which the park gets its name in Finnish (Karhupuisto = Bear Park).

Next to public library, tram stop, some cafes, self-service laundry this is centrally located yet a tranquil spot. Not worth of traveling from other parts of town, but stop here when you are around, or agree to meet your friends here.

The flower arrangement in centre of part has a special history: the park was getting too frequented by "anti-social open-air alcoholists", but a local power-lady Saara Tolonen started 1997 a zero tolerance campaign. The city park office donated the flowers, and Saara and a group of other power-grandmas came every day to water and weed the flowers and reported all bad behaviour to the police. Around 100 volunteers participate in the maintenance.

To take advantage of my 72-hour Helsinki, I decided to take the tram and visit attractions located a little farther away the city center. Took Tram # 7 from a Tram Stop near the Helsinki Cathedral. Along the way, we passed by a beautiful church and this park with beautiful/colorful flowers and a statue of a Bear. I briefly stayed here to enjoy this attraction.

Locals are friendly and helped me how to go back to the city center. Took Tram#6 for this return trip.

The small park near Kallio church has become a pleasant place for locals to sit and meet friends after it was cleaned up and the big central flower arrangement was planted. The bear statue by Jussi Mäntynen is from 1931 presenting the animal, a proctected species in our nature eating at an anthill. The Bear park cafe has moved to the corner location indoors, the kiosk serves only drinks.

Karhupuisto is a small park in the middle of Kallio. There are a bear statue, beautiful flowers, and a small cafe.

Kallio Church is located near the park.

Obviously the warmer summer months are the best time to visit this very small park. There are occasional events beyond summertime, especially around Christmas. Just the park itself is not a special but events are really good.

I wouldn't make a special trip to see this. All there is are some flowers, a bear statue and an ice cream stand (the day I went there were women selling Thai food too but it was a very temporary set up). If you are visiting Kallio Church it's just a minute walk away and worth a quick stop and picture. No playground for kids.

Today Helsinki City gardeners aided by locals were busy planting flowers in the center of this small park for the summer. It is a fine example of bad turning to good as the park used to be a rather dangerous hang out for alcoholics and drugusers which everybody else had to avoid. The public areas in Helsinki are scattered with small "Lippakioski", kiosks with long awnings from the 1940's which had fallen in poor condition so a plan to bring them back to life was formed. Karhupuisto is one of the first and most successfull with a gathering of tables and chairs around it. Doughnuts, cinnamon rolls and other delicious products are made locally at the oldest bakery in Kallio, Avikainen.

Okay it is a Park, and not even that pretty one. But it is one of those places where you can experience the real living city. Alcohol, sex and drugs all mixed with flowers and rainbows. Small pubs and restaurants around. And of course there is the bear (statue). Worth a visit when in Kallio, and I do recomend everyone to visit Kallio. Check the internet to see if there is some spesial events, the athmosphere can really suprise you. But be aware, this is one of those places not to go after dark...
