- Jamie BHawley, Pennsylvania504 contributionsGreat place for lunch and dessert! We came here 3 times for lunch AND dessert, not to mention some shopping. There are places with delicious soups and there is enough variety at the different locations for everyone. It can get pretty busy and depending on the time it can be fast or slow service wise. It is small and you don’t need to allow much time for a visit. The bathrooms are tiny, but they exist at no extra charge.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 12 February 2024
- Barbs25Staffordshire, United Kingdom3,973 contributionsLovely marketReally nice good options here and well priced. Good place to try the local meat and fish all very fresh. Nicely decorated with wooden stalls, enjoyed wandering and snacking!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 April 2024
- Konstantinos CGreece87 contributionsBeautiful little food marketIt is a small market which has a more traditional character. It has shops for everything you want in terms of food. Shops with coffee, sweets, meat, fish, etc. Small and warm places for traditional local delights!!! The prices seemed a bit expensive to me, but I don't know how much the specific products cost in general.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 May 2024
- norman WBraintree, United Kingdom1,776 contributionsMouthwateringWell worth a visit even if you don’t want to buy anything. Wonderful architecture with wonderful wooden ‘cubicles’, inside, selling fish, chutneys etc etc. Seating areas with national delicacies to taste. An eye opener of the old world that our ancestors enjoyed. Of course, there was the inevitable reindeer skins and antlers for sale. A very interesting hour or soVisited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 16 June 2024
- SopiNepiKawasaki, Japan9,185 contributionsI prefer this one to Hakaniemi.I dropped by two market halls during my stay in Helsinki. One is here by the sea. The other is Hakaniemi Market Hall. Both are beautiful brick buildings on the outside. The Old Market Hall has only the 1st floor, not the 2nd floor. Many of them are restaurants. So it's for tourists. But the atmosphere was somewhat upbeat. In the middle is the famous (apparently) Story cafe, which enters through a large glass wall by the sea and receives beautiful sunlight. As unsurveyed divers, we went into a soup joint called Soup + More (I think Hakaniemi had one too), and we were very happy with the volume! There are many sightseeing spots around here, so it is mandatory to stop by.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 June 2024
- B KGurugram (Gurgaon), India186 contributionsInteresting array or food and beverage at competitive pricingThis huge hall-like building structure has many stalls selling a variety of food and beverage items. The prices seemed competitive as compared to other shops and restaurants. They also have free washrooms.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 July 2024
- CMCKent, United Kingdom1,177 contributionsOld Market Hall, Helsinki in JulyIf was here for a week I would be happy to come every day for food and try something different each day. Excellent quality products, open sandwiches from the few places we tried were good, ice cream stall was excellent (hazelnut, pistachio, and a cream wine type of flavour). Had the salmon soup in the first restaurant in the middle section if entering through south entrance, that was also excellent. One thing to avoid is buying bear meat that is smoked / cured. Preparing Bear like that takes away its real taste, and its a complete rip off - 2 thin sticks of bear salami was 16 euros, it tasted like it could have been pork, nice but pointless, tinned bear meat is better. Have a look there anyway as they will give you a sample of the smoked bear so might as well taste it for free (its very salty). Better to go to the stall where the lady is selling bear meat on an open sandwich, also expensive for what you get but at least you get the real taste.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 9 July 2024
- WellTraveled3Lexington, Massachusetts809 contributionsGreat food at The Market Hall on Helsinki HarborSome of the best food in Helsinki can be found at reasonable prices at the market halls in the city. This one is the largest and most oriented to tourists. Food was very good, with a wide variety of seafoods, sandwiches and soups. There are a range of prices, based on each stall or restaurant. One can also eat outside. Only open during the day and closes at 5PM.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 July 2024
- lithlith931 contributionsOld Market Hall HelsinkiThe Old Market Hall is worth a visit while in Helsinki. It's located in the heart of the city and is an easy walk from a few other attractions in the city. The market hall is a mix of souvenirs and food stalls. You can easily grab a bite to eat for a meal or snack, or a gift to take home to friend.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 July 2024
- Richard MHampstead Norreys, United Kingdom946 contributionsA lovely place for some snacksThe market is a gorgeous building next to the harbour and inside you can see the lovely architecture. There are a load of stalls selling gifts and goodies with lots of traditional foods on offer. The centre section is mostly cafes and places to get a wide range of food. We went in a couple of times for a mid day snack and a coffee.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 July 2024

Helsinki's old market, from the 19th century, with a beautiful structure that surprises you when you enter.
There is a wide variety of shops inside as well as restaurants and you can find all kinds of local food: salmon, reindeer meat, bear meat, soups, sausages, preserves, etc.
You can take it away or eat at one of the restaurants.
It is worth the visit and to try the meats that they only have in Finland such as elk, reindeer, bear.
There are bathrooms, but they are terribly small. You can hardly sit down because they are so narrow.
Expensive prices like throughout the city.
Food can be taken away or eaten inside the market. It is worth visiting and doing some shopping
In the Market Square there are beach bars where you can also eat typical dishes. The tables are not very comfortable and the cutlery is plastic, but the food is good.

From the front, the Old Market Hall looks SMALL. And guess what: it is! I was worried it was going to be full of the same crap you can find in every other market hall. But the facility is in impeccable shape, and the vendors sell some seriously quality food. So glad we visited!

Small red brick market, near the marina. Inside there are many small restaurants, almost all with local cuisine, a couple Chinese/Japanese, suitable for a quick meal. The atmosphere is beautiful.

This was quite disappointing in the end.
From the outside, it is a pretty building and we were excited to enter.
However, on going in, we found quite a few stalls empty or closed. Of those that were open, the food on offer was an interesting mix but not many authentic Finnish stands and the prices were super high for “market” food and didn’t seem like good value.
Overall, can’t really recommend until the selection of stalls improves and the pricing represents fairer value for the size and quality of portions you get.

As a building it is nice, inside if you expect a market you will be disappointed. It is more a place of mini canteens, some with a few small tables. No special food here, for me this atmosphere is nothing special. If you want to eat , you can not have privacy, some may like it me not. To look around it is interesting, but not more than half an hour.

Helsinki's food hall is an impressive piece of architecture, and there are no shortage of places to pick for dinner in the late afternoon and evening. But I was left confused by my visit.
I've seen any number of photos and articles about the hall and its various stalls featuring cheese, reindeer, fresh fish, and other Finnish favorites. But when I went, around 5 pm, I saw none of that. There were some tents outside serving salmon soup, but it seemed like every business inside the hall featured Asian food and burgers. I love Asian food and burgers, but that's not what I had expected to find. Maybe the vendors I'd hoped to see only open for business in the morning? Whatever the case, I walked around for about 5 minutes before hopping a tram and heading back to my hotel.

This is always a worth-visit for me. The selection is great, and I highly recommend getting fish (as it's great in Finland). It's a quick walk through if you are just looking around, but if you want to shop for something nice, definitely try it out!

In a quaint old building there were restaurants and grocery stores (selling reindeer meat and stuff). There was also a good chocolate shop. I wanted to eat the famous salmon cream soup, so I ordered it at the shop with something like an open sandwich, like a canapé with shrimp on top of bread. I also ate various toppings on potatoes at other restaurants, and they were all delicious. I'm a little disappointed that I didn't have the courage to eat reindeer meat.

The market hall was bigger than I initially thought it would be. There’s a nice mix of stalls were you can by ready to eat items as well as items which can be purchased as gifts or taken home. The prices aren’t cheap but that’s to be expected when in their main market hall in Finland and I loved the unique wooden cutouts on top of the stalls and it was nice you could get sit in some businesses, so you can enjoy their food whilst seated.
They serve Finlands popular dish Salmon Soup and Reindoor Soup. Once you walk down the second aisle the stalls become a bit repetitive as they tend to sell the same thing. They have toilets inside the market hall, but if these are in use there’s public toilets just outside.
Overall, right next to the harbour so easy to access and a nice range of Finnish delicacies.

It is a beautiful market focused on food in general. There is sale of truffles, jams, spices that can be brought in the suitcase. There are also restaurants , informal snack bars of typical food. Salmon soup, grilled salmon and so many other delicacies.
With the real devalued, everything is a bit expensive in Finland, which is already known

What time is it good to go to get the most out of the market? Especially like lunch!!
Written 23 August 2019
So much will depend on your own itinerary, as there is so much you can do, close by, in and around the area. There are the markets outside, you can take a short cruise, you can walk along the harbour front, etc. You will find it is always busy, so an early lunch or a late lunch might work better, with your itinerary.

Hello, can I get smoked vacuumed fish at the market hall?
Written 19 December 2018
Generally open 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday. Easter Monday is likely a holiday and it’ll be closed for that though.

I think it opened fairly early, we had breakfast there each morning. I say 9am at the latest, possibly earlier 😊
