A Park to Celebrate Finland's Most Famous Composer
The park celebrates Finland;s most famous composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957). There is no admission charge to the park. The sculptured piece of 600 acid resistant pipes measures 8.5 x 10.5 x 6.5 meters. A sculptured head of Sebelius in the same material is also present. The sculpture by Eila Hiltunen was unveiled in 1967. It is of some irony that the pipes resemble organ pipes because Sebelius was noted for his symphonies 2 & 5, as well as, his violin concertos. The park is located by the sea and provides a picturesque environment. Access is available from trams 2, 4 and 10. The Helsinki hop-on, hop off bus has a stop by the park. From Market Square in Helsinki the park is about three miles. The walk is interesting because it allows you to experience the different neighborhoods of Helsinki. A nice cafe called the Regatta is located on the waterfront.

    Modern Art at its best
Jean Sibelius was born in 1865 in Hämeenlinna in the Grand Duchy of Finland, then part of Sweden. He is perhaps best remembered for his 1899 tone poem "Finlandia", which he wrote as a protest against increasing Russian censorship. It featured strongly in the score to the 1990 film "Die Hard 2: Die Harder". Sibelius is today widely recognized as Finland's greatest composer. He was featured on the 100 mark note until the old currency was replaced by the Euro, and the country's 'flag flying day' has been celebrated on his birthday (Dec 8) since 2011. The Sibelius Monument, located in Sibelius Park in central Helsinki, was unveiled in 1967. ten years after the composer's death. The design was the winner of a lengthy competition. It features a 24-tonne construction of more than 600 hollow, steel pipes arranged in a wave-like pattern, along with a sculpture of the composer's face, which sits atop a wall alongside the main structure. A smaller version of the monument can also be found at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris.

I don't get the appeal and why this is even listed among the attractions that you should absolutely see in Helsinki.... The monument is much smaller than it looks in pictures, and it's far from other points of in interest. The surrounding park is ok, but don't waste your time if you're on a tight schedule. If you're nearby, check out the cute café Regatta and the view of the nearby bay.

The park is pretty but the main attraction is the the sculpture in memory of Sibelius. I believe he is known as Finland's national composer, and I do like his music so I wanted to visit. It's a pretty sculpture.
The whole area near the park is lovely, with paths running along the Helsinki coast. If you like to walk and see nature in a city then have a visit.
Nothing to pay but for food.

The original sculpture (which looks like organ pipes) is very interesting, but the subsequent large head sculpture of Sibelius on the side is unusual, and a bit distracting. Nice park setting. Popular with tourists.

What a fabulous park with the 2 sculptures by Eila Hiltunen - the bust of Sibelius and the Monument made of over 600 welded steel pipes. Such a fitting tribute to this famous conposer

The park itself does not have a lot to see, but it's quiet and there are walking paths amongst the trees and boulders, as well as a big marina. The big attraction is the Sibelius monument, which is impressive and very interesting.

I did not know much about Sibelius before this. The beautiful veined rock this is on really makes it. It also has a good view.

Impressive steel structure resembling wind instruments or organ pipes acknowledging Sibelius. Three popup souvenir stalls are nearby catching tourists walking to the site from the parking area.

We decided to visit the monument to the great composer and we’re not disappointed. The Finnish have a way of designing monuments, buildings etc. in a way that never seems to disappoint. After seeing this architectural piece we made our way to the shore on the other side of the park. Finding a seat it was a lovely place to relax and watch nature and take in our surroundings. A beautiful setting.

A visit to the park was one of the stops on our Regent Baltic Sea cruise...and we had the opportunity to walk to, around, and under the Sibelius tubes. It was a calm day, so we did not hear any sound emanating from the structure, which otherwise was not a particularly inspiring site. There were several contiguous porta-potties nearby which were, sadly, not terribly clean, but were useful to those who required their use. We primarily enjoyed looking out on the nearby lake and birds who were feeding on insects in the grass.
Bottom line, unless this is part of a tour and thus unavoidable, we'd not think this to be a site worthy of a special visit.

This park is very large. And very clean. It had the water right by it and a giant statue in the center. Seemed like a super safe place to take a walk. Very enjoyable on a nice day.
