I almost left Helsinki without visiting this place, and I'm glad I carved in some time to see it. The fortress is on a large island, which you can easily grab a ferry to visit. It is a great place to wander on a sunny day. I wish I packed a picnic and had prepped myself for some more "hanging... More

Island to go. Definitely :) Long time ago this was biggest fortress in the north. Originally designed as an attack fortress to support Kungliga Sweriges Marin effort to fight Russians and Russian navy. That is why there is dry dock, defensive fortress do not need big dry dock to maintain or build big, then, war ships... Yep the fortress was... More

We went to Suomenlinna whilst on holiday in helsinki with our two childrem aged 7 and 8. They loved the ferry crossing! The whole island is gorgeous and full of places to.explore and to see. The reason I have given only 3 stars is the cost of amenities whilst there. You used to be able to explore the islands little... More

It takes only 10 minutes from The Helsinki Market Place to go to Suomenlinna by ferry. There are nice restaurants and a lot to see. Doll Museum. Yes you read it right, doll Museum. This small museum is nice to visit for adults also or especially for adults because it is a timetrip back many decades. High hill shoes are... More

Reached by Ferry (which is public transport so very cheap) - they leave every half hour or so from the harbour to the island which was home to a massive fort and barracks for many years. Largely abandoned now but you can walk around at your own pace and look at all the big buildings and old structures. There is... More

Fortress of Suomenlinna is Unesco World Heritage site. The island is a fine place to visit especially on a sunny summer day. Other weather seasons are for those who like extreme conditions. You can spend the whole day on the island swimming, visiting museums and restaurants, enjoying sea view sitting on a rocky side or just eating ice cream. If... More

Fortress Island just outside Helsinki. Short ferry ride from market square. Great views to near-by islands and sea. Nice cafes and restaurants, including a brewery bar.
