It’s a must see attraction. You can walk here from Senate Square or take a tram from the centre. We visited it several times and saw beautiful souvenirs and ate fine meal. Be aware of the seagulls, because they try to steal your fish! You can see the large ships, too.

Great place to get a souvenir and try the local cuisine. They give out free samples, too! Just beware of the seagulls if you order fish, they are waiting on top of the tents to swoop down and get a taste. One lady even had her plate covered with another plate and they attempted to knock it out of her hand. She held on, but spilled about 1/4, which was gone before hardly hitting the ground.

If you go to the Kauppatori (Outside Market) at this time of year you will find that it is The annual Herring Market. Always held during the first full week in October, the market has been happening just about every year since 1743. I decided to go and have a look this year as it is usually a wonderful atmosphere. Of course this year was slightly different because of the pandemic. Usually lots of little fishing boats are set out along the harbour, selling all flavours of spiced herrings. This year I counted only about 10 fishing boats all clustered at one end of the harbour and this year they did not allow customers to taste the herring before buying. But non the less the atmosphere was although less crowded, very much the same as in past years. The herrings are sold in little plastic tubs weighing about 250 grms, of which the fish content is about 150 grms. The price is usually this year about 8 euros (A bit expensive I think), although they do reductions if you buy 3 tubs, the cheapest I found was 5 euros per tub. They sell all kinds of flavours from garlic herrings to the usual "Glassmaker's herring" to Mustard, onion or dill herrings, I have seen Brandy herring and even coffee spiced herring in the past but this year the flavours seemed quite conservative. There is always a competition to find the best herring between the different sellers or the newest taste. Also you can find sweet Archipelago breads and other spiced preserves. The normal market is always worth a visit at any time of year, well except for winter when there can only be 2 or 3 tents set up in the coldest of weather. Now they were selling all kinds of Autumn products from Sea Blackthorn juice to apples and mushrooms. All in all a nice visit.

For souvenirs, this is a better place than local souvenir shops downtown. Perfect example - I bought a large and very high quality reindeer pelt for less than half the price of much smaller and far inferior pelts offered at the souvenir shops.

We visited the Market Square in the morning before ten, when there was plenty of space in the cafes. The prices are quite high like you can expect. You can also find different kinds of crafts targeted for tourists etc. There’s also great ship connections to the Korkeasaari Zoo and Suomenlinna for example.

Helsinki's Market Square in the morning was very spacious, a couple joggers and tourists here and there. There was a lot of cafe tents and all of them were very quiet so you could be in peace. I recommend to visit the Market Square, if you don't mind the smell of sea and fish! The prices were quite high in one tent, but probably cheaper in some others.

Excellent alternative to local restaurants and fast food. The place where you can eat fresh food with an acceptable budget. Food is delicious especially moose meat balls with jam or salmon with potatoes. The view is nice in front of the harbor. Only thing to notice is that stands close at about 5pm.

This is the famous Market Square. A fairly large square, facing the waterfront, filled with stalls of all sorts of produce. You can get curios, clothing, food, etc...etc.. It is also a great place for a meal, especially for sea-food. We were in Helsinki for nearly a week, and we had five or six meals here. The President's palace faces the square. From the square, many famous landmarks are just a short walk: the Senate Square, the Lutheran Cathedral, the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, Esplanade Park, Havis Amanda statue. Easily accessible by trams. Even if you are not in the mood to buy anything, this is a wonderful place to sit down and do some serious people-watching! If you are in Helsinki even for just a day, you should spend a little time here!

While on a Baltic cruise, we stopped at Helsinki and boarded a 4 Stop Shuttle organised by the cruise line. The 1st stop from the pier was the market square (Kauppatori) where there were lots of stalls with fresh produce. Being autumn, we enjoyed the freshest berries. We opted for the wild blueberries instead of the farm grown and they were just awesome. There were lots of souvenirs available and also Scandinavian designed art. Recommend highly.

The Market Square is next to the waterfront. It’s the area where you get the ferry to Suomenlinna also. There were stalls selling local things such as food, clothes/hats. Nice but nothing to go out of the way for.

Is it cheaper to buy reindeer hides from Helsinki or Lapland?
County-Hunter
Tacoma, WA2,996 contributions
This is the one thing I regret about my Christmas trip to Helsinki...that I did not buy a reindeer hide. I can't compare prices between Helsinki and Lapland but I can tell you that prices are definitely a lot cheaper in Helsinki than in the US.
I am going to stay in Helsinki in the evening 7:00pm on 24/12/2017 to morning 10:00am on 25/12/2017
May I know if there is any big market / Christmas market open till late on 24/12 or in the morning in 25/12? I am so keen to go to the outdoor kauppatori market and the Christmas market in the town.
Thanks a lot

Unfortunately most of Helsinki is closed, except hotels and some restaurants. Take a walk around city and admire Xmas lights and visit those few restaurants for hot drinks.

Hi, i plan to visit on Sunday 25th June 2017. I read on its website during summer Sundays would open from 10 - 5pm. Are all shops going to open just like weekdays? or perhaps some are closed and converted into carparks? what about the old market hall/vanhakauppalli next door? is it open too?

I expect Market Square shopkeepers try to keep their shops open also on Sundays (from 10 to 17) over the summer, as they know there are a lot of potential customers around.
The nearby Old Market Hall (Vanha Kauppahalli) is open also on Sundays (from 10-16) over the summer.

I've asked my Finnish connection - and the answer is yes - in fact it is open most of the year - but the number of booths and opening hours can be variable. Enjoy your visit!

Is it open on Jan 8th 2017 (Sunday)? If so, what are the hours? Will there be many stalls? Worth a visit?

I don't think there will be anything worthwhile on a Sunday in January. If any stalls at all - not many - often converted to parking space. Furthermore it can be bitterly cold - in fact there are not many outside sights worthwhile when it's winter - aside of skating or cross-country skiing.
