Market square, where you can not only buy a variety of products and souvenirs, but also have a tasty snack. I really liked the assorted salmon, cod and vendace for 20 euros. I don’t remember which tent, but there were two fishermen singing a song.

A buzzing square, flea market by the harbour. The outdoor stall vendors selling variety of souvenir items, reindeer fur, handicrafts , traditional food, fresh fruits & vegetables, coffee and snacks stalls and lots more to see and buy. There's a ferry connection to Suomenlinna Fortress island from the Market Square

We wandered there one afternoon: cute, typical place, we discovered Finnish products thanks to several grocery stores (admittedly touristy). We wanted to eat at different places that were full. We managed to settle in at Soupe&More, it was very, very good, quick, not too expensive. Perfect for lunch and warming up.

As some have correctly stated, this market is a short bus or tram ride out of central Helsinki on your way towards the Kallie church.
The original, pretty market hall is being gutted and redesigned so I’m sure it will be lovely when this is complete but in the meantime you basically have a slightly soulless modern temporary building which houses the market stalls for the time being.
Now I don’t know if it’s due to it being winter, but the other disappointment was that not all stands were occupied/open and many of the stands were butchers or fishmongers which is great to look at, and great for locals shopping for home, but for tourists hoping to eat some local delicacies for lunch, this meant the choice was very limited. We did enjoy a nice sandwich on fab toasted bread and a delicious sweet treat after from one of the bakery stands but it was very expensive for what it was and the choice was very limited. Hopefully this market can be vastly improved once it fully reopens but for now I probably wouldn’t bother going there unless you are shopping for nice food to cook.
For reference there are also some stalls for other items such as arts & crafts, home decor and flowers.

A letdown after seeing markets in Guatemala, Turkey and others. I found this market quite boring and I paid 8 euros for a small carton of raspberries. Very overpriced and nothing spectacular art-wise. They had some animal hides but they were not fashioned into beautiful designs. Maybe if you're a seafood foodie but the market stinks too!

Half or more of the photos for this listing are incorrect. They show either the Kauppatori open market or the Vanha Kauppahalli, both of which are adjacent to the harbor. Hakaniemi Market is about a mile to the north. All three places are great fun, in my view. Hakaniemi is the least touristed of them.

Stopped for a quick walk through while waiting for the ferry to the island. I found it mildly interesting with many of the stalls selling the same kind of things. Expensive either way you cut it. We did buy some canned sardines and they were $10. Time for the ferry before we spend more.

I stopped by here on my way back from Way Bakery so I was already full. It's a nice place to stop by and shop for food and gifts. I actually like it the most of all the market hall in Helsinki. There's a wonderful vintage Marimekko shop towards the back - GREAT items for collectors. The day that I went there was also an outdoor farmers market!

We visited this lovely market in July & had a great experience. Tasted some local produce & bought several souvenirs, including a beautiful silver bracelet for our daughter. Wish we had bought a ring & earrings to match. Been searching on line for the distributor to no avail. Can anyone help?

Please note that there are two market squares in Helsinki. The one that is in the very heart of Helsinki, next to the Uspenski Cathedral and the Esplanadi Park. This one is the one most of visitors and tourists from Baltic cruises visit. In Finnish this is simply called Kauppatori - the Market Square)
Then there is the Hakaniemi market square (called Hakaniemen tori in Finnish - Hakaniemi Square or market) which is more local and does not have crafts stalls.
Visitors and reviewers in TA seem to frequently mix up these two.
Both are nice and during summer, we living in Helsinki shop in both places. The Market Square is more upmarket and with slightly higher prices. Hakaniemi Market is more for locals and those wanting to get the freshest produce from local suppliers for your own kitchen.
Then there is the Hakaniemi market square (called Hakaniemen tori in Finnish - Hakaniemi Square or market) which is more local and does not have crafts stalls.

Kauppatori или Hakaniemi Market Hall Hakaniemen Kauppahalli. На карте обозначен первый, а адрес указан второго. Название тоже второго рынка. Путает расположение на карте.

Первый находится на пристани, напротив президентского дворца, второй в северной части города.

I will be visiting Helsinki from 24th December to 26th December, will there be any markets open during the Christmas time? Will the supermarkets/ museums etc. open or will they close earlier?

Normally on 24th of December every placd will be closing early than normally. Some supermarkets will be open of course. Most of Christmas markets are not open. Museums will be closed. You may check also Visit Helsinki website or Helsinki Tourist Information

This is more like giving information. This is NOT the famous square near the harbour, which is in the middle of loads of attractions. Hakaniemi is a metro ride away from the centre and has just 10 stalls (one day a month, it has maybe 40 for the farmers's market). The famous Market Square is called Kauppatori and this is how it is listed on TA. Please don't visit the wrong place or, having visited the harbour market, then review it here. You have to review it under the Kauppatori listing.

All this could be avoided if only TA would accept my suggestion of listing "Kauppatori" (the famous market) as "Kauppatori (Market Square)". They seem to have turned down my request for them to do so. People see the listing "Hakaniemi Market Square" and assume that this latter is the famous one by the harbour that they have visited. I don't think much of the market at Hakaniemi, but I prefer the indoor market there. That's not to say I don't like Kauppatori, but it is a completely different experience and a different place.

I am interested in visiting the market when I am in Helsinki in July. As a tourist, could someone please suggest how much time to allow for a visit?
Any comments on shopping for souvenirs/handicrafts at the market or nearby are welcome. Is the market close or convenient to other sites that are highly recommended?

market has about 10 stalls and that is that. You need to go to the Kauppatori Market, not this one. On the other hand, the Market Hall at Hakaniemi is better (cheaper and better quality goods and stalls) than the Vanha Kauppahalli (Old Market Hall) at Kauppatori. So you need Kauppatori for the outdoor market experience and Hakaniemi for he indoor one. Don't get them mixed up as the majority of people do!
