- LilithStuttgart, Germany981 contributionsImpressive atmosphere in the Finnish rock churchWhat I remember from my trip to Helsinki is the quiet, nature-loving, modern atmosphere in the light-filled interior of the Rock Church. The copper roof fascinated me and captivated some of my family. Definitely a place that invites you to find peace. Highly recommended!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 18 March 2024
- Konstantinos CGreece87 contributionsTemple in the rockA very special temple. It is built in a rock!!! The roof has glass around the perimeter to allow sunlight to enter. It is quite crowded but you are not late at the entrance. Entrance costs €8 for adults and free for children. It's worth a visit because it's something you won't see again!!! When I visited it also had a gentleman playing the church organ and it gave a different atmosphere to the temple!!Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 May 2024
- TheBurgersBrookmans Park, United Kingdom1,288 contributionsA church any 'rock' choir would be pleased to play inA wonderful church and incredible that it was built into solid rock - incredible architecture both inside and out, a great feat of engineering. The acoustics are suppose to be excellent and so would look to attend a concert here. There is an entrance fee of 8 euros per person which was worth it.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 May 2024
- Angeliki_LambrouGreece33 contributionsArchitecture MarvelTruly is a beautiful modern church which is design and built in a truly unorthodox way. The finishing and fit outs were beautifully matching the interior of the church with many modern art deco pieces. The size and the construction of the pipe organ is truly outstanding as well. Please stay around to listen to the acoustics in the church if you have the chance to visit a concert, performance or just to listen to the church organ. Excellent example of Finnish architectureVisited June 2023Travelled on businessWritten 22 May 2024
- Seetheworld253Arlington, Virginia207 contributionsWell worth a quick visit, cool architectureOne of the more interesting churches I have ever encountered in visiting 50 countries. It is built sunken into a rock although the slats in the roof although light and visions of the sky to shine through. Truly remarkable place and well worth a short visit. Not sure they hold services here anymore although there were lots of wedding photos.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 June 2024
- SopiNepiKawasaki, Japan9,188 contributionsPlaces to visit. Helsinki-like church of “nature”!A church represents the culture of a country. France, Italy, Prague - I've been around quite a bit, but it's a church with an atmosphere like never before. The very name "Stone Church". Stone walls and wooden ceilings. I try to bring in a lot of sun, it's very bright, it's very nature-conscious, it's very Finnish. It’s really modern rather than “strict”, more like a concert hall than a church. Is it because there is no obstruction and the whole thing can be seen? It's also a short tram ride from the centre and a must-see when you go to Helsinki!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 June 2024
- Marco TFlorence, Italy1,964 contributionsOriginality is undeniableI had visited it many years ago and my impression had not been too positive: an excess of modernism, a very cold environment. It was probably autumn or even winter and was sparsely attended, which contributed to the sloppy atmosphere. But seeing it in July, full of tourists and in a sunny part of the day changed my judgment for the better: now there was life in that large space and the details of the structure stood out more clearly. The originality of the church is undeniable, but the quality of the daring architectural frame is also striking. The only questionable element, the high ticket price, which I suspect did not exist at the time of my first pass: 8 euros for a place you visit in a matter of minutes is not a few.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 July 2024
- stastavroThessaloniki, Greece998 contributionsThe Temple of the RockWhen architecture meets nature, it creates a unique and fantastic temple. Inside the rock, with a glass dome the temple will surprise you. One of the most beautiful sights of Helsinki.Go by tram 4 . I also want to share with travelers that the best and cheapest way to see Helsinki is the amazing public transport trams. Buy a ticket for 24 or 48 hours ABC and see all the attractions!!Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 July 2024
- Richard MHampstead Norreys, United Kingdom946 contributionsA church like no otherThe church was created out of the rock and it is simply stunning. The interior is basic but the atmosphere comes from the rough rock surfaces and incredible copper coloured metal work. It is just an amazing place that really took the breath away.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 July 2024

The windows in the ceiling create a beautiful play of colors inside. Should have visited if you are in Helsinki. The only drawback is the entrance fee and the lack of toilets.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 30 July 2024

Entry is €8 for an adult and I think children are free. I’d like to say I’m fairly well travelled but I’ve never seen a church like this before. The wooden circle on the roof, slates which let in a lot of natural light and rocks/stones all the way around.
You won’t need long here, we stayed a maximum of 15 minutes. Around the back of the church you can walk up to the top if you wish. You can’t see the green roof but it’s very peaceful. There’s also a few benches so it’s good spot to rest your legs.
Overall, a beautiful church with an utterly unique design but €8 entry seems a little excessive.

Thank you for visiting! The dome is actually made of copper both on the inside and on the outside.

This is a beautiful church worth visiting if you're in Helsinki. The place is beautiful and staff are very nice. As soon as I arrived and told a member of staff where I was from, she immediatelly started helping me in Spanish, a very good one, I must say, I thought she was Spaniard due to her accent. She welcomed me to Helsinki and explained briefly the church to me in my own language, which I appreciate. I mentioned I always wanted to visit the country because one of my favourite singers, Tarja Turunen, is Finnish and she didn't hesitate to recommend me visiting again later that day for a classic music Concert. It was THE BEST start of my short trip in Helsinki. Soli was her name. I'm grateful for the service and the tips.

This is a wonderful example of architecture thinking outside of the box. It's set within a large roundabout built into a rock mass with it's large green dome protruding like a spacecraft from the top. Inside the walls are of the same rock all the way around with a very basic altar and an organ to the left. It's very nice to see but there's no way I would pay 8€ to visit it. Instead, I simply arrived at 09:45 on Sunday just before the 10:00 mass and no one said anything, took my photos and left before the service began.

Money pit - totally skip it- they charge 16 Euros for 2 adults to enter the church but have no decency or obligation or compassion to provide bathrooms for visitors. Recommend saying time and money and watch it on YouTube, trust me you will not miss it and thank me. I went through the ratings show but I believe this is hyped up.

Came here on a Sunday in June, pre booked tickets as I heard there can be long queues if a bus of tourists arrive. When we arrived there was no queue. It’s worth coming once but 8 euros is a rip off as you only need to spend 15 mins here. It’s not somewhere you want to stay for long as it’s quite warm in there on a hot day. Most people took a seat to get their moneys worth it seemed. I can imagine it being amazing to see a concert here though, so check if something is on during your stay.

It is a temple in a rock with a main area on the ground floor and a second one smaller upstairs. It is something different that you don't see every day. You will need 10 minutes to see it and to take pictures. There is no something else to see and the price is too high.We pay 8 euro per person!!!!

I read that in 2018 entry cost €2, today it costs €5, a nice increase in 5 years. The church is not recognizable from the outside, the entrance looks like that of a garage. The benches inside are the only furniture, their blue painted structure is worn along the edges and so the white of the underlying wood emerges. The concrete walls have no plaster and reveal the imprint of the wooden planks used to form them. I don't judge the aesthetics, but I criticize the shabby level of conservation and the rough level of finishing. Many have given 4 or 5 stars to this church, I wonder how many they would give to the cathedral of Florence or that of Monreale.

Grazie per la sua visita! Thank you also for your comments, because it´s always interesting to hear how people see a place. Temppeliaukio Church represents the building style and easthetics of the late 1960´s. It was never the architects´meaning to use plaster on the walls or in the ceiling, because this is a building incorporated in nature, with the rock walls, the small waterfalls and the natural light shimmering in. With hundred of thousands of visitors per year and as much as nearly a million in 2019 the pews do get worn out and are therefore maintained at regular intervals. How a church hall could hold any other furniture apart from the pews, I cannot really understand?

This place made me remember two feelings that I had almost forgotten:
Firstly, how much can mystical places and classical music feel magical when they’re combined –as it happened here.
Secondly, how awfully embarrassing it is to be a tourist sometimes.
Why? Because some people have no respect for anything.
The church had a pianist at the time of my visit and he was playing the most beautiful music I had heard in a long time (I’m not exaggerating; it was breathtaking) (they sell his CD in the shop btw)… when suddenly a big tour arrived and ruined everything; they just wouldn’t shut up! they were laughing, screaming, and walking everywhere like he wasn’t even there or like nothing mattered much; not understanding that part of the charm of the place is its serene beauty.
Also, even if the church was not in service at that moment, it’s still a church; it should be treated with dignity.
A woman –who looked absolutely superficial both inside and out– literally starting posing on the piano; touching it and trespassing the rope that protected the pianist. She was doing a whole photoshoot there. It looked like a joke. The musician seemed pissed too, and even stopped for a minute, but ultimately no one did anything (nor said anything) to her.
They desperately need more rules in this place, and more strictness.
I know that it is highly visited, but that’s more of a reason to have a controlled situation that helps to preserve it.
Other than that, absolutely beautiful experience. Obviously recommended when visiting Helsinki.

This is an extraordinary church and is very much on Helsinki's tourist trail, so don't expect much tranquility here during summer months! Cut into rock, the church is a short walk or bus or tram ride (no 4 goes past it) from Helsinki Central Station. There is an entrance fee - this will vary depending on when and where you buy it.

This was truly a biblical experience as the church was overwhelmed by a plague of human locusts from cruise ships (special thanks to Holland America cruise line). The building is remarkable but it is so swarming with people it’s downright unpleasant to visit. Maybe better to pretend you’re a devout Christian and visit during a service.

Sorry Vicki,
I am not sure. I think it is likely to be open on December 6th for Independence Day. We travelled to Finland in October when the tourist season was "supposed" to be over, and found many tours unavailable. We found a tourist bus still available and travelled around Helsinki on this. Hop on hop off buses had ceased in September for the winter months.

Hola!

Written 5 March 2018
