Local time travel
Nov 2020
This museum is located in the beautiful river delta of the Oulujoki River. The museum building of 1920s classicism is quite impressive in itself. The beauty lies inside.

We have visited this museum before but every time there is something new in addition to permanent exhibitions.

For a tourist, it is practical that you can find the Oulu Museum of Art and Science Centre Tietomaa nearby.

Lots of information
Sep 2020
It was good with lots of information- quite a lot of it is also in English. The museum is quite dated as evident from the display of old coins that refer to Finland about to join the Euro. The layout is a little odd with no clear order. It is worth a visit and is reasonably priced for what you get. The lady on the reception was extremely nice and helpful.

Very interesting but needs updating
Sep 2018 • Friends
We spent two hours in the museum, which gives a history of Oulu and the surrounding area. It is very educational, and a lot of the exhibits are fascinating. Our only criticism is that some of the displays are a little tired and some need updating, as they are a few years out of date.

Interesting museum
Aug 2018 • Couples
This museum is located in the beautiful Ainola Park. It takes you through the history of Oulu, Northern Ostrobothnia, and the whole Finland. Well worth of the six euros entrance fee.

The history of northern Finland
May 2018 • Friends
While somewhat old fashioned extremely interesting. In the basement was a display of the doghilll kids a series of children books based on traditional rural life. Loved the display. There were exhibits showing Oulu from its earliest days to today. We wandered around much longer than I expected

Fasctinating look intio the city and aras past
Apr 2018 • Friends
I visited here with a local friend.
As we both like history it was a perfect few hours spent learning about all the maritime history and changes that have shaped what we see today in modern Oulu!
it is a well laid out and very informative museum , but with out getting to bogged down with vast amounts of text to lose your concentration.
Some great displays and a very cool diorama of how Oulu was laid out in past times.
It does house some very cool artifacts ,from old Nokia mobile phones and a stunning old carriage amongst many other displays.
If you like your history and have time to spare a very recommened visit is required!
Not expensive entrance fee , i am always happy to put my money into local causes and infrastruture

Learn about the region and city
Apr 2017 • Friends
I went with my friend who is a local ,he had not visited this museum in over a decade
It has a good range of displays and enough information to keep your attention
It is laid out over 4 levels so not overbearing or to much in your face
A fascinating insight into the city from the very beginnings to the region and some about historical events on a national scale
The diorama of how Oulu looked in 1938 was a particular highlight,as now it has ten times the population
I also liked the chronological order of how transport and mobiles have changed over the decades
The old money ,from ancient times tonold Marrka was very cool
Only cost 6euros and is a interesting place to learn alittle
The only thing I was not to keen on ,they could of lit up the English translation abit better
To help the reading process
There is a craft section, even if it is not your thing ,worth a look

Quick Memory Lane to the Past
Mar 2017 • Friends
It was a quick 1,5 hours visit with friends from our Demola Memory Lane team. We worked on developing an app to encourage crowdsourcing of historical photos and oral history for the past 3 months. When the project reached its end, we wanted to make the closure memorable for both knowledge and friendship. The museum is located in a park covered with fresh snow like a fairy tale land. Upon entering the museum, it was a quiet Friday afternoon but the collection this museum offers is excellent to guide you walk into the past right from the pre historical period until modern day of Northern Ostrobothnia.

The English version of info display is quite limited but our Finnish friends are kind enough to share with us so many exciting stories behind the exhibition. Maybe as a school teacher and a master student in education, what fascinates me the most is the mode of 1930's Finnish typical classroom. I saw a bucket and bowls used to serve food for children which the tradition to provide free lunch for school kids remain in practice until now, and has become something that Finnish education system feels proud of.

Maybe the museum is not as exciting as Arktikum Museum in Rovaniemi, but this museum should be included in one of your destinations if you genuinely want to appreciate the historical background of this beautiful city of Oulu.

I will definitely recommend it to you and will have another visit Inshaallah, with at least 3 hours duration to fulfil my satisfaction.

If you want to learn more about local culture, but not only, it is a must. And it is not so expensive (6 euro).
