A lot of things to do
Mar 2021 • Couples
Went here for a week of cross country skiing. Very nice experience, a lot of things to do and see. The skiing facilities are very good both for alpine and cross country skiing. A lot of different tracks to choose from, the most beautiful is to go to the top of Valtavaara, amazing views from there.

Great winter location
Jan 2021 • Couples
Ruka is one of the southernmost places in Finland where it is almost certain that one can experience proper winter. Last year (2020) the snowline was not much to the south, although there was also much more snow here. All in all, a great location for winter activities.

Much to improve

Do not make internet reservation to Piste ski rental place. It is slower than the normal process - even if it should be vice versa. Very slow even in off season. Cross-country skiing routes are poorly marked. Good trailing routes though.

You dont have to be a skier
Jan 2020
This was our first winter holiday and We stayed in a log cabin about a ten minute walk from Ruka, which was beautiful and very well equipped .The scenery is breathtaking and with thermals and ski jackets/trousers we were never cold. There is plenty to do even though we were not skiers or snowboarders. It was nice to have a drink watching them. There are plenty of places to eat put in Ruka. We went on the Gondola, which was 10 euros per round trip as was the village express. The views on the trip and when you are at the top was amazing. There are plenty of excursions, and would recommend.........Ice fishing, husky farm visit(incredible to be in charge of the huskies pulling you on a sledge), after the ride we had coffee, sausages and rolls when we could ask questions. Reindeer farm....... again to be so close to these lovely animals was incredible. With coffee and pastries afterwards it finished off the visit perfectly. Snowmobile safari....2 hours of driving through beautiful scenery and forests was fantastic and last but not least a ride over Ruka and the surrounding area in a helicopter, stunning to see the area from the air. We will definitely be back.

Really overpriced
Feb 2020 • Couples
Food was okay but nothing like fair value. Can't see how they can justify the very high prices given the (low) quality of food. Definitely won't be going again.

Winter Wonderland

Second year in Ruka, stayed in the new Ruka Valley hotel, which is literally right on the doorstep to the ski school on the opposite side of the hill to the town. This isnt a problem though as a gondola runs wetween 9 and 7 to and from the town to the valley where ski school is held. Plenty of blue runs for beginners.
The hotel has a resteraunt and bar which is open until 10pm, good quality food run by very friendly staff.
Slopes are very good and well maintained, the main reason we initially chose Ruka is the guarenteed snow, cold and the wide range of excursions available.
It was actually cheaper to get here and stay in this wonderful hotel than it was to get to corfu last year, however, the excursions, lift passes, equipment hire and food and drink soon make up for that.
Overall, plenty of places to eat, all excelllent quality and easy access to wherever you want to go. Keep it quiet tho, currently the most attractive part of this place is how quiet and laidback it is. All this makes it a fantastic place to visit. If there is one negative, its the volume of snowboarders has increased significantly on last year ,it can be a bit intimidating for skiers still learning, would be good to,see at least 1 slope where snow boarders are prohibited.

Booked with Crystal Ski first week February.

Cold on another level
Mar 2019
Breathtakingly beautiful and breathtakingly cold. The skiing was limited when compared to alpine resorts but was good enough and I still loved the place. I particularly loved the slope-side fire huts to warm up and cook a snack if you fancied it. The cost of the basic holiday was fairly low but this is balanced against the cost of additional activities, food and drink. All were pretty steep. With regards alcohol I found it amusing, initially, that all wines in the supermarket were only 5% alcohol, it's the law. For full strength wine you have to go to a liquor store. Overall, I loved Finland and can't wait to return. The bleak unspoilt beauty of the area is simply stunning. The days are very short with the sun setting at 14:30, this isn't a problem though because all runs are flood lit which provides good definition of the surface of the snow so it is possible to ski right into the evening. It is cold though, -28 one morning on the piste and -34 when we went dog sled riding. You will need good equipment, particularly gloves, The best you can get. Good quality thermals are essential and you will need to layer up so they don't want to be too bulky.
We found a frozen lake a mile or so out of the village where we trekked one evening to camp out and watch the northern lights, a truly magical experience albeit at a mind numbing -38. Our eyelashes froze together but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Travel date Jan 2019 and not March as shown.

Glad you liked it and yes it can be cold, but temperatures do vary. It is always good to come prepared for -20 C during December-March. Welcome back during summer, the nature is equally stunning and mosquitoes are not as bad as you might think! ;-)

A lovely place to go!
Jan 2020 • Couples
Took a holiday here in January for a week and was very pleasantly surprised by Ruka! As a smaller resort, it had all the amenities that you would need for a week or two on holiday!

It is an easy place to navigate and most things are within walking distance of all the accommodation types. If not into skiing, there was a whole load of activities that could be done via a few different tour companies. All the tour companies I used were very good and all spoke excellent English - puts my one word of finnish to shame!

There was plenty of different restaurants and bars to have drinks and food in, as well as 2 different small supermarkets if wanting to cook yourself etc.

My only gripe would be the bus in that it isn't as frequent as I would have wished for, and stops quite early in the evening.

I would definitely recommend Ruka as a place to visit for skiers and non skiers as the scenery and surrounding areas are simply stunning. It can get very cold (-29°C with wind chill was the lowest it got while I was there!) so you need the appropriate clothing for the weather!

All the locals were extremely friendly and made people feel welcome!!!

Would definitely go again
Jan 2020 • Family
Ruka was really good and people of all ages could go including small children, it was a little expensive but most of the time it was worth it. We stayed in self catering apartments and the ruka sale supermarket that was about 1km away was really helpful and a lot cheaper than the village k market but I would recommend you make sure that you can call out for a taxi before hand if you are doing a lot of shopping as the walk there and back isn't the best.
