Castle ruins in Kajaani
Aug 2021
I’m interested in history and I have visited the castle ruins in Kajaani many times. It is mostly 30 years then I was here last time. Then you could go around down in the ruins, but now they are closed for some renovation, so you can only walk around them, but still you has a good look over them. The castle was built at the 17th century, but during a war the Russians blew it up in 1716. Now they had built a bridge over the ruins. Many want to preserve the ruins as a historic value as the most northernmost castle ruin in Finland, but many also wants to destroy the ruins forever. A must see when you visit Kajaani.

Incorrect map location
Jun 2021 • Family
The castle is not at the location reported on the app map. Look it up on Google maps to get the correct location. As of writing this, you cannot go inside as there is some kind of work going on there.

Interesting
Mar 2021
It is really interesting to see the old castle ruins, there is a small amount of information about what the rooms used to be and you can walk around it. It is ruined a little bit by the fact they have built a large road over the top of it.

History in a beautiful setting
Aug 2019 • Couples
I felt quite honoured to visit the world's northern most castle ruins. It's a ruin so clearly not much to see but it is history that made the town of Kajaani. There's a nice little park where you can sit for a picnic while enjoying the castle view

Beautiful scenery, a place of history
Jul 2018 • Friends
Like most of the reviews have mentioned, there's not a lot to see but it is a historic site after all; a marvelous piece of history that has withstood the test of time. It is what it is and to see the actual remnants of a castle ruin in the 21st century is pretty rad in itself. During Independence Day, you can purchase a candle to adorn the ruins and it's a beautiful, ceremonial display of Finnish patriotism.

Interesting historical castle ruins

There is not much left of the castle. There are some information boards, wich I recommend reading (finnish, swedish, english).

We found this place very interesting and beautiful.

Not much to see

The best view was from the bridge. It good that the old ruin is a visitor attraction but there isn't much to see. Access is via a small footbridge.

Important bulwark against the Russians

This, the world's northernmost castle ruin, has an interesting history and is well worth a visit. It dates back to the early 17th century and is strategically situated on a small river island. Information boards give a good background to visitors.

Beautiful scenery around the castle ruins
Aug 2018 • Business
The taxi driver recommended to visit the ruins when I was coming from the Kajaani Airport. So after the dinner I walked only 100m-200m from the town center to reach the site in the middle of the river. The ruins were interesting but rather small area. You can see the whole area from a bridge that goes above. The best part of this site is the awesome view over the ruins and river around it 👍🏼 The parks next to river are also very nice and clean.
