About
Open your eyes to the Arctic! Arktikum museum and science centre is an all year round destination and one of the must sees in Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland. Arktikum lets you experience northern nature, culture, and history up close. Also, it is a place where the mystery of the northern lights is revealed with an animation, facts and stories. That and so much more about the life in the North is explained in our exhibitions. Alongside the exhibition visit, we recommend visiting our café. You’ll get to savour the colourful northern harvest in our lunch buffet and soak in arctic design on your coffee break. Arktikum Shop offers high-quality Lappish products and souvenirs. KINDLY NOTE: The science centre exhibition at Arktikum is being renewed from April 1st to December 5th, 2024. Welcome to explore the new exhibition “Arctic Opposites” starting December 6th, 2024! The Regional Museum of Lapland exhibition in Arktikum is open as usual.

Worth a visit - lots of interesting facts about Rovaniemi, the Arctic, flora, fauna, history and life in the Arctic region
Very interesting exhibition! Lots of interactive objects. We spent a few hours in the museum and ended our visit in the café with good coffee and a great pastry. There is plenty of parking available. German-language audio guides are available free of charge.

    Entertaining and educational
Very enjoyable museum, interactive and allowing you to play little games and use all your senses to fully understand the arctic living and culture. I saw both kids and adults having fun here which I know to be a sign that it's a good museum, educative and entertaining both. Beautiful building as well

    Hidden Gem in Rovaniemi
Was in Rovaniemi for 3days with a travelling group and had 3 hours of Free time, so we decided to go to this Museum, which covers all facets of living in the Arctic, and particularly Lapland, which covers all 4 nations. There was the permanent science exhibitions about the northern lights and the Arctic seasons. They had a temporary exhibition about Sami culture and wildlife, presented via photography and artefacts, which was well presented The building itself is quite impressive, with its glass roof and low impact on the environment. We also ate lunch at their cafeteria and for 15Euros we enjoyed a decent, delicious meal, with vegetarian options, with coffee/tea included. They also had food options as well. Whilst we enjoy science stuff in general, our time in this museum flew by and we got to see all of it. I would have spent longer, if time permitted. The museum was cleverly curated to appeal to lots of visitors.

    Stunning architecture and Informative exhibits
We visited here on a particularly blizzard-y day to kill a few hours before our flight home. We enjoyed it a lot... lots to look at from the permanent exhibits and a stunning building to enjoy for a few hours. Exhibits have both Finnish and English accompanying text.

    Rich in content
Nice museum, although until December 5 partially undergoing renovation (we were sorry not to have seen the science section although we appreciated the reduced ticket). Lots of content, with particular note of merit to the original black and white footage. Two notes: make it more interactive (the first part consists of information on the walls that make heavy fruition) and improve the amount of translation within the audio guide, also improving the visibility of the points that "activate" the audio guide itself.

    Arktikum
We walked to this museum in about 15-20 minutes from our hotel downtown in July 2024. Half of the museum is closed for renovations, which was disappointing, but they did have a lower entrance fee because of it. What we did see was interesting, however, not well organized. Exhibits were not in chronological order, which made it a little challenging to follow. There was an audio guide in various languages to use for free, but we were unable to get them to work as I think they needed charging. This is a unique building, so get a couple of neat photos inside and out.

Very interesting, as well as very nice
If I don't give this museum the highest grade, it's only because, for a renovation that will finish only in December, two of its exhibits have, at the moment, been canceled, leaving large spaces empty. For the rest, a visit to the Arktikum is of great interest: not only to better understand the history of Lapland from the Stone Age to the present - with panels that explain better than in many other museums what happened in the country between 1939 and 1945 - and the evolution of the daily ways of life of its inhabitants, but also to reflect on other themes. Remarkable is the exhibition on the theme "Life and death in Lapland", which crosses pre-Christian traditions with Christian ones and the accounts of Olaus the Great on the peoples of the North, but equally interesting is the large section dedicated to the events of the territory of Petsamo, taken from Finland after the Finnish-Soviet war. Finally, a very positive note should be reserved for the architecture of the museum: a visionary and magnificent work of art, a sort of ice palace nestled in a low hill, which in winter - as can be seen from photos and postcards - immerses itself in an enchanted atmosphere, but also in summer has its charm.

    LAPPER LIFE
Beautiful property overlooking Finnish territory. I found it very interesting and organized very well. The central glazed structure is superb. The side rooms bring Lapland culture to life with photos and videos. A thrilling cinema hall where you can relive the seasons of this wonderful territory

    Very interesting
Very interesting and well represented. Audio Guide in various languages included in the price. I loved it and I had to choose , I would opt to visit only that. I had bought the cumulative ticket but after visiting the other museum, I could have limited myself only to this

For those who love history and want to learn about the Arctic
A very complete museum about the history of Rovaniemi and the whole Arctic. There are several exhibitions in a large, inclusive museum with a good thematic library where you can sit, grab a book and rest a little. When I went we were outside the summer season, so part of the museum was unavailable, but still worth the visit.

Arctic Museum and science center to experience the nature, culture and history of the North up close.
Interesting testimonies of the Lapp people in symbiosis with their territory.
Stimulating, to observe artefacts, (stuffed) animals and landscapes typical of the region, to learn about the Sami and their living habits but also the causes and consequences of climate change.
I: Outside the Museum, a truck sells reindeer skins at the lowest price in Lapland.

Arktikum is a beautiful museum designed by a Danish architect Claus Bonderup, his bust figure is prominently displayed by the walkway.

At the entrance ticket service counter, we bought 2 adults, 2 seniors & 1 student ticket. There is a gift shop selling souvenirs . Lockers are available to keep our coats and bags. A row of chairs are neatly placed for visitors to sit while waiting for their group to start the tour. We select our language flyer & audio guide, then proceed into the exhibit halls..

A very well organized History & Science Museum that exhibit with lots of write up about the history of Lapland , The wars 1939-1945, where Germany and the Soviet Union fought over Finland before & after WW2 .

The Rovaniemi miniatures depicted many stories of its people with display of family heirlooms and furnitures. There are exhibits on the Sami people , Sami Crafts and other indigenous peoples of the Arctic.

A part of its Nature Exhibit shows how they have historically lived with animals, snow & climate change. I liked the aurora borealis theatre, where we lay down comfortably on benches and peacefully enjoy watching the northern lights show on the ceiling.

So much to see and read, it needs few hours to be able to see the whole exhibition, plenty of pictures taking opportunity, but it’s a pity that I could not post it all onto my review. However if you do get a chance to visit Finland, do not miss Arktikum in Rovaniemi, Lapland.

This is a lovely museum with a number of exhibits about the arctic, the sammi and the Finnish life and history. It is a nice setting with a reasonable number of exhibits and provides walkable options if you are staying in Rovaniemi - you can buy a pass for all theee museums for 20 euro or pay the entry fee for individual museums. A guide from Nordic Unique travels told us on a clear night it is possible to see the northern lights from behind this museum.

The Arktikum Museum is unique in its kind. It is a space to understand the northernmost region of the world, both in its geological and human process and even the fauna and flora that make it up. There is a clear presentation of the different human groups living in this region. To fully enjoy the museum it is necessary to dedicate at least 4 hours and tour both the exhibition rooms and the interactive objects.

If this is your first, or the only museum that you will visit in the Artic or Lapland, then take the opportunity and definitely visit here. If it isn’t, perhaps take a break?
I’d already visited a couple of very good cultural museums in Swedish and Finnish Lapland plus several artic museums, and each time, I’ve been surprised to find a wealth of new subjects and ways of displaying information making it new and interesting to look at. Unfortunately, not so here although perhaps I have just reached saturation point?
The main display I found to be of interest here was regarding Petsamo. Lots of information, personal stories, well laid out and not something covered in detail elsewhere. Some smaller art displays were also interesting.
I felt the artic display was cramped, lacking in modern, innovative, well presented information despite there being some interactive exhibits. The section of the northern lights display I saw were uninspiring and not looking at all like the real thing.
I also found the main glass hall unbearably hot and stuffy although I’m sure this isn’t an issue in winter! Not my best museum experience.

We went there at the end of December as part of an organized trip with a travel agency. Interesting museum divided into 2 sections, 1 regarding the history and nature-culture of the Sami (Laps) and 3. Science of Lapland. Quite interesting. Our tour guide (sorry I don't remember her name) gave the tour in simple words and quite concisely without a lot of useless information. The 2nd part with the natural phenomena (day-night, ice melting and others) is much more interesting. It's worth a visit anyway. Don't ignore it completely.

A museum that is also a scientific center, a place to discover history, culture, peoples, nature of the North in a succession of thematic rooms.
But the most important lesson I bring from this visit: "the lands are our children" ! Impressive all the considerations on climate change

The big part of museum is interactive, so kids enjoyed it a lot and simplicity of explanation helped them to understand everything. It touches all parts - daily life of locals, nature, history of all region an Rovaniemi town itself. Only one thing why we are giving four stars is that not all parts of stands were working properly at that time

One of the attractions to visit in Rovaniemi is the Arktikum museum. The parts dedicated to the history of Lapland and that of the Arctic world are very beautiful. I had far greater expectations for the part dedicated to the Northern Lights but the museum remains absolutely worth seeing

The museum is child friendly and interactive, having lots to discover. The architecture of the museum was so nice and the christmas markets during December gives an extra joy to the visit. For the ones who cannot catch auroras, there is a small video room that gives you the feeling a bit.
