About
When looking for something different and interesting activity in Rovaniemi, welcome to the Forestry Museum of Laplands unique stage for history. It is the only museum in the world that tells a story of Lapland's great logging era extending from 1870's all the way through to machine operated forestry of 1960's-1970's. In the wooded museum area there are genuine logging cabins, logging tools, timber floating tools and forestry machines on display. Forest cabins and other buildings have been transferred to the museum's location from various parts of Lapland and all the cabins, stables and saunas have their own interesting history. Also the items on display have their own story: one of the most interesting and impressive items on the museum's ground is Sandberg's steam locomotive that was perhaps the first of its kind used on machine operated logging sites in Finland. I stayed in Rovaniemi for over a week and took the bus from the center to visit the Forest Museum in Pöykkölä. It's an interesting open air museum with a lot of buildings, boats and machines. It tells you a lot about the logging history in Finland.

The lady on reception was very friendly and gave us an English guide to follow around the museum.

There are lots of log cabins to explore with boards inside showing you the history. Some of the old photos are amazing to look at. Very pretty place too as next to a lake.

Glad we decided to stop by as was a nice couple of hours spent doing something unexpected. The boards could do with replacing in some of the cabins though.

This show was excellent and it should be on the itinerary of every visitor to Rovaniemi during Christmas. It is quite a short show but very well done. My 5-year-old daughter was convinced that the elves were real and enjoyed playing with them after the show. The only thing to consider is that the museum is quite far out of the way and taxis are a real problem. One very nice man had to give my daughter and I a ride to the city center after the show. Without his assistance, we would have been stranded with no way into town.

A place for history-lover. Feel the history of Lapland which lives from the forest. These are the real houses where lumberjacks lived while working in the old times. You can also see interesting historical equipment and tens of old log houses. If you love old buildings, this is a must see place. PS. There is a beach next from the museum - a perfect combination for the hot summer day.

This is a museum under the open sky. It tells about a simple and hardworking life that lumberjacks lived in Lapland. There are several buildings with authentic objects and furniture, such as tools and cutlery. It is better to listen to the excursionist's story, otherwise you won't get the whole experience. Interesting insight into local history. Open only in Summer and Autumn though…

We visited the area in February and one day followed a hiking trail to the Forestry Museum. Unfortunately, when we got there, the signs showed it was open only from June to August.

We carried on and had a longer hike instead, but it was disappointing, and seems strange to be closed during the busy tourist season.
