Today, my daughter and I had the pleasure of visiting Irene and Ari, who warmly welcomed us with a homemade Lappish lunch, featuring bread, salad, Salmon soup and a cloudberry dessert. We even had blueberry juice and coffee—a truly delightful meal. As we dined, we engaged in conversations about U.S. and Finnish history, admired Irene's artwork, and appreciated Ari's craftsmanship, including the house he built. After lunch, we explored their workshop, delving into the region's history and learning about local trees, pine tar, and reindeer. We toured the shop, marveling at the artisans' creations, and had the opportunity to craft our own keepsake to take home. This intimate experience, set in a private home rather than a typical tour, was exceptional, and I highly recommend it.

Very authentic Lapland expierience in warm and welcoming workshop. Irene and Atis are very expierienced craftsmen. We learned a lot about lifecycle of reindeer, arctic nature, old gods, elfs and why sami shoes are curved at top.
Kids loved making neclaces and earings from natural materials. Hosts where very helpful, Irene swiftly personalised the items.
The tea and cake where delicious. Home made blueberry juice very tasty.
If going back to Lapland this is the experience i would love to repeat again.

We booked this hoping it might be a mildly interesting way to spend a couple of hours, since we had free time - but our time with Irene and Ari turned out to be the highlight of the entire trip to Finland! We loved seeing the Northern Lights, and dogsledding, and our stay (at Apukka Resort) - but truly, this is the experience I have the most photos of, have told the most stories about, and would most encourage people to seek out. I know that sounds over-the-top, but it's the simple truth.
You learn so much from the most delightful and charming hosts - who don't brag about it, but whom you come to realize are truly recognized artists, not just folksy crafters. They give a fascinating window into what life was like for the Sami people, and what it's like even today - the wisdom behind the traditional artisan work, and how and why they are keeping it alive.
Our group was six adults, and we hung on every word in the different rooms of their workshop, and all had such fun trying our own hand at a craft - even the least artistically inclined among us. Then, Irene and Ari brought us next door into their beautifully cozy home and treated us to drinks and snacks. We all felt entirely welcome and like a group of longtime friends, not strangers on an excursion.
From seniors to adults to children, this is my top recommendation for Rovaniemi. I could have stayed here for a week and been fascinated the entire time.

If you ever wanted to live and learn about the culture and lifestyle of this wonderful Lapland you are visiting from a true believer and practitioner in the old ways, search no further.
Spending the day in Irene and Ari’s heart warming workshop and loving home was a unique and fantastic experience.
Starting with the incomparable Irene, teaching you about the daily life of caring for a reindeer herd and living in the midst of the Laplandic wilderness from past times to modern times. Learning about the rich and unique history, tradition, hardships and beliefs of all the territories above the northern arctic circle from their own family ancestors experience. Then being shown how they personally craft and bring to life the art of these lands and heritage from the bounties of Mother Nature. You will learn and experience it all from possibly the warmest and most interesting character to be found in the country.
To give you a concrete example, when moving to the practical application of crafting, Ari and Irene designed on the spot and helped us craft a one of a kind pendulum for our yet to be born child from reindeer horn and traditional materials.
But the surprises don’t stop there, moving from their workshop to their own lovely home in the woods, you will be treated to a delicious spread of home baked local delicacies, cakes, tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Above all the home made blueberries and lingonberry juice Irene makes from the berries she gathers herself is something indescribable that you will never get the chance to taste coming from a store.
In short this cultural experience is something that could easily go unnoticed in the middle of a catalogue offering exciting excursions with fancy action pictures. But take it from people that have actually had the privilege of spending a day with Irene and Ari; it will enrich your life and fill your heart with memories so much more while leaving you with a deep appreciation for the land, the traditions and the people of Lapland!
