We are a reindeer family located in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland. We are a small reindeer herding family in Rovaniemi, Lapland.
Our main source of income comes almost entirely from reindeer herding, which our family has practiced for decades.
Our name, Porohaka, has stayed the same from the start of the 20th century when our farm was established. This is our first time to open our reindeer farm for travellers as you.
We at Porohaka wish to introduce you to the tradition of reindeer herding.
We welcome you with open arms!

I highly recommend visiting Reindeer Farm Porohaka! This was such a special experience, our top in the Rovaniemi area. The farm has been in the same family for 4 generations. Our host, Katja, was unbelievably kind (more on that later in this review). We did the 2.5 hour farm visit with our family that included two children aged 6 and 9. It was a magical, unique experience for them (and for the adults), especially having so much time to feed the reindeer. I think my son wanted to become a reindeer farmer! The tour included a ride on a sleigh pulled by a snowmobile (Katja made sure we were all warm), feeding the female reindeer in their enclosure, homemade blueberry cake and warm drinks in the kota, and feeding the male reindeer leaves from branches in their enclosure. We all learned a ton and were very comfortable and felt very well cared for (it’s also clear that the reindeer are very loved and well cared for!). This was exemplified by Katja’s care when we had an unfortunate issue with our rental car on the way home (of note: the road to the farm is totally fine / passable if you drive carefully, we just got unlucky with our car) — Katja came and picked up me and my children and we spent several hours in her home where she kept us fed and entertained while waiting for the tow truck to arrive. Her warmth and caring spirit are above and beyond — truly a kind soul. In summary, if you’re on the fence, just go ahead and book confidently — you won’t regret it.

Our trip to this reindeer farm was amazing! It's a slow, relaxed experience in the best way possible! Our hosts, Katja and Vesku, are the warmest people we've met in Finland, and their hospitality is unparalleled. I've learned a lot from them about the reindeers, and even learned some survival skills from Vesku by creating a fire with a magnesium flint and steel kit :-)
This is really a small-scale experience, which means you have all the time to meet the animals and ask questions. We were joined by just one other couple during the activities.
I cannot recommend this enough!

An Unforgettable, Authentic Reindeer Experience
We chose Porohaka Reindeer Farm because we were looking for an authentic experience away from the tourist crowds, and it did not disappoint. Katya provided a very personal experience where you could forget you’re a tourist. It was just our family with her, as she keeps the groups small, which made the entire visit feel relaxed and intimate.
Katya welcomed us warmly and ensured we were all well-prepared for the cold, providing extra layers where needed so that we could fully enjoy the experience in comfort. We then had a ride on a sleigh pulled by her snowmobile through the forest to the reindeer enclosure, the ride itself was a great experience in a wonderful setting.
The enclosure was large and once inside we could disembark and feed the reindeer in our own time. The reindeer themselves were wonderful—gentle, inquisitive, and happy to come up and be fed by us. There was no rush at all, just plenty of time to enjoy being with these beautiful animals in their peaceful surroundings. Katya provided lots of information about her family's history of reindeer farming and it was lovely chatting with her and learning more about the reindeer.

Our trip was magical: the farm is in the middle of a beautiful forest, and is run by a family that really loves reindeers and taking care of them.
Katja accompanied us to meet and feed their lovely reindeers, which roam free in a vast area, and explained to us many details of their lifestyle and habits. She also offered us warm drinks and homemade cake by a lovely fireplace.
The experience was very intimate, non-turistic and well done: I 100% recommend visiting this lovely place to stay away from the tourist traps.

The experience was amazing! We enjoyed every moment. The hosts are extremely friendly and attentive. They received us at home for a visit to their Rennes livestock farm. We were able to feed the Rennes, take a sleigh ride and receive plenty of information/advice from the hosts. We also shared lunch in the kitchen of the hosts with a delicious homemade meal! We recommend this experience 100%. It was the best day we spent in Rovaniemi!

We absolutely loved it. We booked the short tour as we were afraid of the cold temperatures in February and we were the only ones there - so we had a private tour. I was lovely - we could see the reindeer and feed them, Katja is a lovely host- she explained all about the reindeers to us and she took a wonderful care of our little girl - they fed reindeers together.At the end of the tour we sat by the fire and had a cup of coffee and home-made blueberry pie- if I had known how lovely it could be and how warm the weather was...we could have booked the whole day with them - which is I truly recommend.

We spent the whole day (10:45 a.m - 3:45 p.m) at the reindeerfarm. When we arrived we received a very warm welcome by Katja. The total amount of the group was 8 people but we split into 2 groups which was perfect. At first we went on a sleigh with the snowmobile to the female reindeers in the forest. There we had a lot of time to feed the reindeers and to take photos of/with them. Afterwards we had lunch (traditional reindeer soup) at Katjas house. It was so delicious and the home itself was so cozy. In the afternoon we did a reindeer sleigh riding and then we had coffee/hot kakao and cake at a grillkota and we learned there as well how to make fire ;) It was a great experience - well recommended !!!

We just returned from a wonderful visit to Reindeer Farm Porohaka. The communication in advance of our trip, and we had a fabulous day spending time with Katja on her family’s reindeer farm.
Everything that was did was perfectly described on the website, and Katja and Vesko couldn’t have been more hospitable.
The reindeer are clearly well taken care of - we greatly enjoyed the time we spent feeding the female reindeer, and the ride on the sleigh was magical.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the lovely lunch of reindeer meat soup in Katja’s home and the time we spent in the kota at the end of the day where we enjoyed hot drinks and delicious blueberry bread.
If you are thinking about visiting a reindeer farm near Rovaniemi, I can’t recommend this one enough.

Such a fantastic day. The sleigh ride was such fun and so much better and longer than the ones you see closer to town.
Feeding the reindeer was an absolute highlight. So amazing to see all their different personalities.
Lunch was delicious. The fact the Katja makes it everyone morning just made it yummier! Blueberry pie was great too!
The guides were both very genuine people, such knowledgeable and passionate farmers.
Would definitely recommend if you are looking for a more authentic, small guide experience.

Katja is an angel of the Reindeers and of her visitors. Incredible experience. The visit is more than worth the 1 hour drive from Rovaniemi. Road is good despite winter. After a hearthly welcome you drive with Snowmobile slide through the forest and visit about 50 Reindeers and are inmidst of the animals who like the food and try to get most of it directly from the basket. Katja explains so many interesting information about the whole life of the Reindeers and their owners. She gives enough time to really feel and enjoy. As well it is a very small group or you may be on your own. So no touristic hassle thing, but pure ecological and nature experience of the anomals and farmer. After the visit to the "ladies" Reindeers we have visited the "boys", somewhat shy but approaching us after a moment to eat leaves from branches. And not to forget the fire place, tea, warm chocolate and frehsly baked blue berry cake offered. Highly recommended!!!
