About
We are a small reindeer herding family in Rovaniemi, Lapland. Our main source of income comes almost entirely from reindeer herding, which our family has practiced for decades. Our name, Porohaka, has stayed the same from the start of the 20th century when our farm was established. This is our first time to open our reindeer farm for travellers as you. We at Porohaka wish to introduce you to the tradition of reindeer herding. We welcome you with open arms!

This was by far the best experience we had in Lapland, the reason for this is that Katja and her family treat you like family. They can do that because they only accept small groups (maximum 8 persons per day), hence thay have all their time and attention for you. On the day we visited, wr were a total of 6 persons, our family of 4 and another couple, they spil the family in 2 groups, our family started with feeding the reindeers whilst the other couple (were not with us), they started the raindeer ride.

The feeding of the reindeers is an incredible experience, you go to the farm from the family home with a sledge being pulled by a snowmobile and you enter the farm with around a 100 reindeer and they come next to you while you feed them, then we got put of the sledge and spent around an hour petting and feeding the reindeers, in the meantime Katja was explaining everything about the reindeers, she's very knowledgeable. After the feeding it was time for our lunch, she took us to her home and we ate a delicious reindeer soup in her dining room, it was served with water and juice.

After lunch we went for a long reindeer ride in the forest, I think it took around an hour. After the ride they invited us in the kota and lit up a fire and we had some lively biscuits baked by Katja and a delicious hot chocolate, and we spent some time drinking hot chocolate by the fire whilst 1 of her staff was showing us some tricks hiw to lite a fire without matches or a lighter.

This was an incredible day, all the family had great fun and experienced a real day at the farm. I suggest that everyone should try this awesome experience, you won't regret it. Katja and family, hope to see you again one day.

We were looking for an indivudell tour far away from the main activities like reindeer sleigh 400 meter or activities where big groups were to expect. So we have been picked up on time by a nice driver and nice car. After a ride of aout 1 hour we arrived at the Porohaka farm. We were only 3 people who where there. That's great! So we could have this totally private guided tour and we started feeding the reindeers which are living in the woods. That was great! After that we returned back to the farm where Katja prepared delicicous lunch. It was like being invitied by friends!
After that we went for a reindeer sleigh ride. Each one uf us had his own sleigh. The ride was about 1 hour though the great forrest and snowy landscape. As a highlight after the ride we returned back to the farm and received hot coffee and hot chocolate in a Kotta house with a warm fireplace with ihn. Then we could warm up, talk and received a very special souvenier to take home!
After roughly 6 hours we went back to our hotel. Again the nice driver gave us a ride and dropped us before our hotel.

This tour was superb. The best part was how it was family run and the owners of the farm were clearly very passionate about their work and the animals. The tour was not rushed at all and there was a lot of time to interact with the animals. We learned a lot of interesting information about the politics and practicalities of reindeer farming in the greater context of Lapland. Everyone was very kind and patient with my kids when they needed help getting their snow gear on. The snow gear kept them warm enough even though it was -22. The soup was delicious! I would 100% recommend this tour. I suspect it’s the best one around because the hosts are so personally invested.

We had the most amazing day with Katja and her team and, even though we had so much fun in all the other activities we experienced, it was definitely the highlight of our trip to Rovaniemi (and of many other trips too).

Since the moment we sent an e-mail to her making a special request she was so nice...she is definitely a special person. We spent a whole day with them learning about reindeer and life in Lapland, having delicious homemade food, riding a snowmobile and sleigh, enjoying the perfect landscape and experiencing life in a farm.

All the experience was personal, amazing and perfectly planned but what we enjoyed the most was the fact that we actually felt like if we were in our friend’s or family’s house because they made us feel so comfortable and welcome all the time.

We were never in a rush, we could take all the time we needed to really enjoy the experience and we had interesting conversations all the time. Also, they really care about the animals and the landscape is just so beautiful it makes you want to stay there! It was very hard to go back home after this and we can’t wait to go back and visit Katja again!

If you are looking for a magical, authentic experience that will forever be one of your favourite family memories, then book this tour at Porohaka Reindeer Farm.

We were lucky enough to spend Christmas Eve at Porohaka Reindeer Farm with our 7 year old boy. On request, Katja kindly put together a bespoke package for us which incorporated both of the tours they offer. To say that everything at Porohaka exceeded our expectations is an understatement. Activities were extremely well organised, warm and fun, we learnt so much about reindeer farming, we ate the most incredibly delicious and lovingly prepared foods and really felt welcomed into Katja and Jukka’s home. It was such a special day for my husband, myself and my little boy and unlike any other tour I have been on, we felt like part of the family rather than tourists. Katja even sent us photos of the day which were a wonderful memento of the day. Katja and Jukka are such thoughtful, generous and considerate hosts and the day at Porohaka farm made our Christmas. We will never forget it.

This trip is a MUST if you are traveling to Lapland. Katja has created a knowledgeable, homey and amazing experience. We learned about her family farm, the reindeer farm organization in Lapland. We spent time feeding the reindeer (which was beyond cool). She invited us into her cozy home to eat with her and her husband delicious homemade reindeer stew. We then were whisked away on a sleigh ride into the wintery forest. We returned to a warm fire with homemade blueberry cake (which was soooooo good) and hot chocolate! We even were taught how to build a fire from birch and iron/magnesium! It was a truly unforgettable experience and I'm glad we found her and her farm! The 6 hours flew by! Thank you Katja for all you did to make such a memorable adventure for us!

Lovely host and heartwarming experience. The tour was relaxed and cozy, and the activities were very fun. We were taken care of by Katja and her crew at every detail. When sleighing through the frozen forest in warm clothing and shoes prepared by Katja and "wrapped" in double blankets, the experience was truly memorable. The reindeers themselves were adorable, friendly and resilient. For us, they symbolize Lapland and its people. Katja was extremely knowledgeable about reindeer farming and shared with us many interesting facts about the animal as well as the industry. I especially appreciate Katja's passion for maintaining the tradition and their way of life — living in harmony with nature like her ancestors have done. Overall, the tour felt personal and intimate, like visiting an old friend. Thank you Katja, we wish to visit you again.

Wow. What a magical day. Cannot recommend this enough. The hosts are incredibly welcoming, knowledgeable and the welfare of the animals is paramount. The pace of the day is perfect. You are in a small group and the day is broken up into a (activities might be the other way round depending on your group) reindeer sleigh ride, lunch, feeding and petting the reindeer that live in the forest and then warming up with a coffee or hot chocolate by the fire. Just incredible. Worth every penny.

For our first day in Lapland, we were looking for a cute local experience as a couple. This was beyond our expectations. First of all, you will be welcomed a very heartwarming Finnish couple in their own home with an unrivalled sense of hospitality. Their reindeer farm, created by their ancestors in the early 1900s, is really ethical and they provide a very large area for reindeers to live during winter time.

Be ready for a Reindeer sleigh ride followed by lunch in their home, a tour of the farm on the back of their snowmobile through the forest where you will be able to spend time with reindeers and feed them. We’ve also learned a lot about it, they are very knowledgeable people. They are taking time so you’re able to take as many pictures and video as you need.

The experience ends around a fire with coffee, hot chocolate and a delicious home made blueberry cake. We did not want to leave. I strongly recommend, worth every penny
