Fantastic to meet Petri. A real insight into his daily life as a reindeer herder. Great to sit and have coffee round the fire, and hear all about his life and herd. You get to sit among his beautiful herd of reindeer and it was great to touch them and watch them feed. Our favourite trip when visiting Hotel Korpikartano.

Petrus Matti is a Sami reindeer herder, as was his father and grandfather before him. He tends his herd in the same grounds as they did his only concession to modernity being he travels out to the forest on an uber cool snowmobile rather than skis. Out in a clearing he chants a sort of Joik which carries up to 5km and within minutes anything up to 100 animals join him. You and he feed them and then have sooty coffee around an open fire. He really is the real deal.

Memorable visit to a friendly English- as well as Inari-Sami speaking family. we went at New Year for a three hour trip involving a snowmobile drawn sleigh ride across the frozen lake to visit his reindeer in a snow covered clearing in the wood. coffee and team on reindeer skins around a camp fire while learning what reindeer herding is like. then back to his modern house to meet his charming wife, learn how to lasso a reindeer and see how a traditional way of life has come through the now ended period of compulsory finlandisation to pick out the bits of modern technology and the modern world that it wants while staying true to its roots. finally back to our hotel by snowmobile. you can see Petri on YouTube entertaining UK celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey.; I back Petri. great trip for the children; very family friendly. extra warm gear available - it was minus 30 before wind chill on a blustery day the day we were there. longer trips including overnight (in summer) are available.

We read some of the reviews for Petri Mattus' Reindeer Farm and thought we had to visit. I'm so glad we did we had a great experience visiting Petri's reindeer farm! We all really enjoyed it, our 3 children (aged 4 through 10) loved it.
We had no trouble booking via email obtained through Petri's website and the directions took us from Inari right to his door. Petri met us and provided additional socks, bigger shoes, full overalls over the top of our snow gear, plus gloves balaclavas and helmets. Fully kitted out we took a seat in the sled (our family of 5 plus another couple). Petri towed us behind the snow mobile across the frozen lake and through the forest to a clearing and called out to the reindeer, some were already there waiting and many more came running! Petri set up a camp fire and made coffee, tea and hot chocolate and provided cinnamon rolls while he talked about reindeer and reindeer herding. It was really interesting! We then went back to Petri's house where we met his wife Kirsi. Whilst all rugged up we were a bit cold on return, Kirsi helped our little one get out of the additional clothes and rubbed her hands to keep her warm and even offered to rub her feet! Kirsi talked about the Sami culture, the Inari Sami language and schooling. It was really interesting. To finish the visit we tried our hand at lassoing a reindeer and then Petri lassoed one of children! It was cold but it was great. We loved it! Go and visit if you can- be sure to book ahead, it is a working farm. Thanks Petri & Kirsi

If you want a truly authentic experience with a Sami, go for this experience with Petri. Our family of 8 thoroughly enjoyed our time in the wild and nature with the reindeers. Petri called out to them in the forest and it is amazing to see them trudge out of the woods to him. You get close to them for nice photos shots and some close ups. The reindeers are very friendly. You can ask Petri about the Sami way of life. We get some nice Finnish coffee before we head back to his home. You can also purchase genuine reindeers hide if you wish. Highly recommended.

We’ll remember about this experience as one of the best moments we have had in Finland. You can really learn how is a reindeer herder’s life. Petri and his family are wonderful people, you would like to stay with them for a whole day. The tour starts with a snowmobile ride guided by Petri, you will go in the middle of the forest, where you will see many reindeer, attracted by the call of Petri. So petri will talk to you about his life and these animals. You’ll have time to enjoy this moment and take some pictures. After that, you’ll come back home where his wife will give you an explanation about the uses and customs of the Sami. Thank you Petri!

The reindeer herd roams in the forest, they aren't fenced in. When the herder calls them for dinner, they emerge out of nowhere by the dozens. They aren't as big as cattle, but they aren't exactly tame, and are somewhat wary of strange people.

2 of us visited Petri's reindeer farm in Decemeber 2016. It is awesome experience for us who are living in Hong Kong. We are very lucky to have a chance joining this small group visiting. I was cheated by my husband that it is a tough visiting which I need to work and feed the reindeers. haha! It is the best activities ever in lapland which you can try both handmade sleigh with snowmobile and keep closely with reindeers. We safaried with reindeers and knew more about the autarkic daily life in lapland, such as taking care the business and reindeers, fishing in summer and hunting, no need buying foods from supermarket. Petri and his family enjoy their life so much. Petri got well-prepared, with tea or coffee which it is unexpected !!! How attentive he is!!! I felt sorry that this visiting idea come from Hong Kong people. but it is true that it is unforgettable for us and totally different with our life in HK! Keep up and all the best! I highly recommend this visit!!

Hello, my son and I will travel in a few months.
I would like to know when it is the best time to visit and enjoy your farm in March, April or May. Which of these three months would be better to visit you?
thanks!!
Written 5 December 2019
Hi, thank You for the message.
We have the reindeer herder's dsy - program available till the end of April. And calfing - program 10th-20th May. They are very dufferend, but in both you get close to the reindeer.
Un March we still have a good winter and I recommend that. The program is still possible in April, but You never know how fast the spring comes and the snow condition change. We do carry out the program then as well.
Welcome to Inari

I'm so attracted to your farm but some of these reindeers look so hungry and skinny. Our family is planning a trip so hope we can come visit. Hope all's well with all the animals and farm.
Written 8 December 2018
Hi, thank you for your message. The reindeer are free animals and they live free in the nature. I don't know which animals seem hungry. Our reindeer are doing fine.
The reindeer find their food in the nature. Sometimes the winter conditions may be hard and the ground gets frozen, then the animals have difficulties to get enough food. But then we offer them extra food in the nature.
We also have a possibility to bring some reindeer home and give them extra care, if they are in crtical condition. This is needeed rarely.
