Kuopio Museum
Aug 2021
They have a renovation going on, so only a part of the museum is open. They show a part of the LEONARDO DA VINCI 3D exhibition together with the Kuopio Art Museum. Kuopio Museum will open in two stages: on June 15, 2021, a new space for temporary exhibitions, a museum shop, workshop venues, a café and meeting rooms opened. These are mainly located in the new building between old Kuopio Museum and Kuopio Main Library. Permanent collections of natural sciences and cultural history, as well as the children’s playroom will open in late 2021 or early 2022.The art collections include primarily Finnish art from the end of the 19th century to the present. The art museum continuously displays special exhibitions, mainly Finnish contemporary art: paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs and media art. The main themes of the museum’s collections and exhibitions are landscape and nature, as well as the human–environment relationship.

Fully renovated museum
Jul 2021
Kuopio Museum is located in a stunning Art Nouveau-style castle building completed in 1907 next to Snellman Park. This museum is the third oldest museum building in Finland after the Helsinki Ateneum (1887) and the Turku Art Museum (1904).

The museum was closed for renovations in 2018. At the same time, the museum was connected to the adjacent library. The building connecting the Kuopio Museum and the City Library was opened to the public in February 2021.

On our visit, the only exhibition was Leonardo da Vinci. The other exhibitions were still under construction.

Kuopio Art Museum also has an exhibition of Leonardo da Vinci. So there was plenty the same at two different museums.

Closed for renovations
Sep 2019 • Couples
The museum is closed until 2021 for renovations. Some of the stuffed animals are on display in Puijo Tower if you want to see the moose, bear and wolves. They are occasional visitors to Kuopio. I'm not sure where they've housed the mammoth though!

Beautiful display
Jul 2018 • Couples
A tiny museum in a beautiful building. The 2 top floors display very well all wild life of Finland.
Very well suited for families with young kids.
The only disadvantage is that the signs are only in Finnish. It would add a lot if the signs would be bi-lingual (Finnish-English). They have though, only on request, at the ticket office a folder with English text

Good museum for such a small city
Nov 2017 • Friends
I liked the museum very much. They can give you an extra booklet with explanations in English because all the signs are in Finnish. The first floor has a Finnish nature exhibition with animals, a movie en beautiful pictures of the Finnish lakeland. The first floor is focused on all different types of animals, especially winter-y animals like white foxes, lynx, reindeer, elks and owls. It was really interesting. The mammoth wast stunning and it was located in a small room which made it kind of relaxing to sit and just look at the giant creature. There was also a second floor which had a traditional shop and two finnish exhibitions (one was jewelry) which were totally in finnish so only nice to look at a few minutes if you don't speak the language. We stayed more than 2 hours in total, because we just wanted to read a lot in the booklet that was given.

History of Kuopio

A nice museum to visit for Finns and people who are interested in pre-history. Last time I visited they did not have English descriptions of the pieces. The mammoth is a must-see!

This museum gives a good view of Finnish history all the way from stone age to machine guns. It also gives some glimpses on Mr Kekkonen and a lot of photos on hay storages.
