Some decades ago, Stockholm harbor and channels were full of activities; shipping, boat-dwelling, yachting and fishing. Today, it's mostly empty quays.

The Stockholm Canals offer excellent photography opportunities in this beautiful city. In addition to the great photography, the Canals provide for a pleasant walking experience.

Great view even though it was a sunny but chilly afternoon. Good guide with lots of information about the life and history of "Stock holm". Try the upper deck even if it is cold, they have quite a supply of blankets....

We started our visit to Stockholm with a canal tour which gave us a good layout of the land. They offer headsets in numerous languages. Fun cruise that lasted about 1 1/2 hrs.

Took a guided boat tour around town that went through a lock, on into a lake. Really some beautiful scenery that you may not access to by a walking tour.

While our visit in January the canals were frozen and it gave the sight seeing around the city a nice touch. Though no offence, but they're not comparable to the canals of Venice, Amsterdam or Bruges. You won't miss them, they are all over the old town.

The most beautiful parts of Stockholm are all of the narrow streets and bridges that weave along and over the canals. There are so many beautiful bridges, colorful row houses, old churches, and other sights to see that you'll enjoy the journey without worrying about the destination.

Staying in Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen

Neighbourhood Profile
Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.
