This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

I had to see IT as I've heard so much. But you can give it a miss. Not a lot to see except masked hen selling weed, and lots of people smoking weed.

It took us back to the scene in San Francisco in the late sixties. There are certainly some 'free spirits' around and open sales, of what would otherwise be "controlled substances," by hooded masked vendors who clearly are not interested in being identified. Off the main streets, the place as a little more charm. It made for a good walk,... More

We went for a flying visit to Christiania, and it is a truly unique place. Colourful buildings, colourful and friendly people, obviously cameras are strongly discouraged due to some illicit activities going on, but if you obey that rule then it is an amazing place to visit!

A good amount of the income for this commune comes from selling refreshments and stuff to tourists, so it's very tourist-friendly. The pot and hash dealers, selling from booths, are rather amazing.

This is the most over rated place to visit in Copenhagen. It's called the free zone and is not accessible by law & order. It's a place meant for hippies and photography is not allowed. From the moment I entered this place I got bad vibes about it. It's infested with drug peddlers and please don't take your kids here.... More

Very funny and different to anywhere else! Take a walk around and enjoy the streets, houses and shops! Be respective of their rules (no photos in pusher street)! There are loads of children, but do be aware that they sell and smoke drugs :-)

A really interesting place. The last time I went was in winter where it was quite depressing. In summer it was lovely. If you are not interested in buying the weed there are little stalls to look at, a few nice cafes and bars. There was also some music on in the Nemo area when we were there which was... More

Our local friends took us to Christania so we could experience it for ourselves. We entered through a side path and all of a sudden there were pristine lakes in front of us. We crossed a bridge and walked along a gravel path with quaint houses spread along. Great place to breathe in fresh air and walk. We then entered... More

This place was recommended by the hotel. I expected more.. Certain attractions on the area were interesting like the church and street food area. I enjoyed water side walking but not the whole area..

I enjoyed seeing how the alternative lifestyle functions on a commercial level. The street art, food gardens etc. are unique. I felt comfortable and safe, but don't take pictures after the signs ask you not to. They enforce there own rules!

Staying in Christianshavn

Neighbourhood Profile
Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By, you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century, and canals which are home to many boats and ships, some of which has been turned into restaurants or even serve as fully furnished homes. The best known attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free town” of residents who squat on a former military area. However just a stone’s throw away from Christiania, you’ll find some of the most fashionable waterfront apartment buildings in Copenhagen as well as the splendid Royal Opera House.
