Address
Neighbourhood: Indre By (Inner City)
This is the heart of old town Copenhagen, with its blend of charming old buildings and bold new architecture, broad avenues and tiny streets as well as picturesque canals and a modern harbor. The inner city is home to the Royal Danish Theatre, which consists of three buildings, two of which are new and situated on the harbor front. The streets, squares and venues of the inner city and its surrounding neighborhoods, are alive all year round with everything from jazz festivals to outdoor ice skating rinks and parachuting at the lakes right in the center of the city. This compact area boasts beautiful old castles, tranquil parks, and bustling squares where you can always find a bench to stretch out your legs whenever you need a break.

First building I came across when arriving in Copenhagen as I went straight for a walk along the waterfront. Impressive modern architecture.

The library is stunning to see from the waterfront, and if you take a stroll inside and a lift ride to the top of the atrium you can see the sweeping modern design of the interior. Be there at 1 pm to hear the 3 minute soundscape. There is a shop and a cafe. The garden to the back of the old library buildings has a pool with a sculpture fountain, gravel paths and benches to sit and contemplate the meaning of it all. Lovely garden, almost Like the Tuileries in Paris.

The garden and the building are worth taking a good look. Spring was still early here, but already very enjoyable.

Through the Royal Gardens we saw the lovely façade of the older building dating from 1906. Beautifully embellished with stone craft and stained glass.

Continuing on, the Black Diamond came into view. Grandly placed at the waterfront it is a remarkable construct from 1999.

Inside the scale and design of the Diamond is indeed impressive. An auditorium, Queen’s Hall, is just one of the superb facilities and services.

It was marvellous to see the Old Reading Room with gorgeous Corinthian columns and personal reading lamps with green shades. A further tradition is the indexed multi-drawer catalogue cabinet.

Impressively, it is one of the largest libraries in the world and holds many treasured manuscripts plus a copy of almost every book printed in Denmark since 1482.

The library is in a beautiful location overlooking the water; the entry feels like a hotel lobby or shopping mall. It's interesting to see how the original historic building is connected to the modern addition.

The Royal Library in Copenhagen is the national library of Denmark and the university library of the University of Copenhagen. It is among the largest libraries in the world.

The library was founded in 1648 by King Frederik III, who contributed a comprehensive collection of European works.

The library is located in two buildings. It was interesting to see how seamlessly a modern building is attached to an old one. Three bridges connect the new building with the old part.

The old building was built in 1906. The impressive central hall is a copy of Charlemagne's Palace chapel in the Aachen Cathedral.

A new building known as the Black Diamond was completed in 1999 adjacent to the old one. This building is named for its exterior of black marble and glass. The exterior wall of the stunning atrium is made of glass. While using the escalator, you have panoramic sea views.

The striking Black Diamond building is a modern waterfront extension to the Royal Danish Library's old building.

The nickname is a reference to its polished black granite cladding and irregular angles. The Black Diamond designed by Danish architects Schmidt, Hammer, Lassen was completed in 1999.

The atrium with a huge glazed front facing the harbor is stunning. The facilities include also a 600-seat auditorium, the Queen's Hall, used for concerts, theatrical performances, and conferences.

The Royal Library, also called Black Diamond is a black granite and glass building. It is a new part od the old library building. There are different exhibitions, café and restaurant abd also auditorium for concerts. The facade is totally different than the inside of the building.
