The Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil, in Sparta (Peloponnese), transports you to the culture, history and technology of the olive and olive oil production in the Greek realm, from prehistoric times to the early 20th century. The Museum's objective is to highlight the ineffable relation of the olive with the identity of our country and, more generally, the Mediterranean basin. The olive and olive oil are presented here from different optical angles: the economy, nutrition and the olive's uses, religious worship, art and technology. The Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil offers you the opportunity to see the very first testimonies about the presence of the olive tree and the production of olive oil in Greece: Rare fossilized olive leaves, 50,000-60,000 years old, from the island of Santorini, the oldest findings offering proof of the presence of the olive tree en Greece Linear B Tablets of the 14th century BC (exact replicas), with the first written testimonies about the olive and olive oil.

Really interesting and well-done museum highlighting the importance and history of the mighty olive. Stopped by on a whim, and ended up staying for two hours. Hats off to the people who made this little gem happen.

Excellent small museum giving a fascinating history of olive oil production & its importance to 3 millennium of Greek culture. Only 3 euros entry, worth every penny - we spent 90 minutes there.

It was really interesting, although there was so much information that you can not take in everything.

I'm not hugely interested in Olive Oil production but my partner wanted to go. But I was not bored; the museum is quite small but there is enough to see.

A short walk to this interesting well build Museum on the edge of Sparta, with lots of interesting facts about what else but the humble olive. The tree and olives have many uses.

For many years we have avoided this museum. Much as we enjoy our olives and olive oil, surely a museum dedicated to the subject is going to be a bit boring? NOT SO. A fascinating, informative and beautifully displayed collection with all sorts of ancient...More

Not sure I would drive to Sparta just to see it, but do not miss if you are in the area. Very interesting overview of the part that the olive culture played in Greek history and economy.

After driving through Sparta, signage is helpful in locating the museum, located on a back street. Very modern and well maintained, the exhibits are sequenced and the descriptions of the exhibits )(In both Greek and English) are wonderfully informative and compelling. There's even a hands-on...More
