Quiet and beautifully set near the lake, you have to walk through the Castro during the day - it's pin drop quiet and beautiful, Also, make sure to check out the museum inside, it's worth it.

The lake, the castle, the mountain views are really relaxing and amazing the same time. The city as well. A nice castle with a beautiful inner yard, well refurbished and astonishing view . If you plan a trip to Ioannina, don't miss it .

Enjoying the history and the beautiful nature
Jul 2019
The city is located on a lake, with beautiful mountains in the background. The fortress is on a hill from where you can see the picturesque surroundings. There are three museums in the fortress, the largest of which is Archaeological as well as a cozy restaurant. Near the Ioannina is the Dodoni site, the famous oracle of Zeus.

Great historical destionation
Nov 2019
The Museum and the castle of Ali Pasha Tepelena, (who as an Albanian ruler under the Ottoman empire), that I visited, was a great place and I would like to call it magnificent regard on historical importance. It was a well-preserved sight surrounded by welcoming people around that gave us even desserts to taste.
During my two-day visit to the city, the cicerone didn't lie, never told the full story but discarded everything about Albanians, and their magnificent costumes and his activity related to an independent Albanian state. Lord Bayron had enthusiasm for the extravagance of Albanian dress during his visit to Ioannina (Janina) in the letter he wrote to his mother about his purchases: “I have some very ‘Magnifique’ Albanian dresses". Nothing was told during the visit about Pasha's and Albanians\Arvanites Great Contribution to Greek Independence even though the little library outside was full of books regarding Arvanites' contribution. They have removed the full name of him from all the city except his (Ferman) death sentence which written in full, Ali Pasha of Tepelena.

Incredible site
Nov 2019
Walking around and in the castle is quite amazing. There are also things to see inside this very large castle, there's a restaurant called It's Kale and the silversmith museum, and Ali Pasha's grave site. A definite must see!

Plenty of Ruins
Oct 2019
The castle is within the city walls. There really isn't much of a building, but there are plenty of interesting ruins. It also offers beautiful views of the lake.

Great to walk around and enjoy the old part of the city
Sep 2019
This isn't a castle as one would think. It's really the old part of the city with a wall around it. Within the walls are some ruins and ancient buildings that were worth the look. There's a great view of the lake from the castle.

Lots of history
Oct 2019 • Couples
There is no charge to enter the walls of the fortress and walk up to the Acropolis where there is an old hammam, mosque ruins and view. This was a Hellenic, Byzantine and Ottoman fort.

Large and sprawling
Sep 2019
More like a city than a usual castle, there is plenty to see in the Ioannina Castle, including a Byzantine museum, shops, and eateries. Definitely worth a visit near the lake.

An old town in the castle
Jul 2019
One of the highlights of Ioannina is to walk in the narrow cobbled streets of the little town which is included within the castle of Ioannina. Small, quiet streets without cars brings you a sense of history. The present fortification dates largely to the reconstruction under Ali Pasha in the late Ottoman period, but incorporates also pre-existing Byzantine and ancient Greek elements.
