Perfect setting but really cold water
Jun 2021
I still recommend it. And the kids didn't mind the cold water. They enjoyed swimming in the crystal clear waters.

Paradise on earth

Ideal area for vacations for families, couples, etc. Good pedestrian path until the river springs, facilities for canoe-kayak, 2-3 hotels and many restaurants-cafes.

Great adventure - go early morning!
Sep 2020 • Couples
We set off early and were 2nd car to park - got there before 9am. It was covid time so I suspect much quieter than other years. We had already read up on what to expect, so we had swimwear on, bathing shoes and waterproof phone cover and small rucksack. You will DEFINITELY need wet shoes if you want to walk the river.
It was wonderfully quiet - we followed the path to the river and stepped in.... was a bit chilly but in a good way! We set off upstream, gets deep in a few places (held rucksac up over head!) I swam a bit - upstream is blooming hard work!!!
It's beautiful scenery, really stunning and it was so quiet and peaceful, not sure it would have felt the same surrounded by other visitors.
We walked a fair way, a good 30mins plus to the big stone bridge, then we climbed up the rocks on the right hand side to a mountain path - hubby went to the bridge so I could take photos (it's high - no sides/barriers - no way was I going near it!). We then followed the path back down the gorge - it follows the river path but is up high, in woods, mud, narrow at times - especially if you suddenly come across 3 cows and the herds women heading up the path to top fields - that was a surprise!! We had to climb up into the hedges to allow them past - Greek lady who was with the cows found it v amusing and probably said so in Greek- if only we knew!! We did manage to say 'kalimera' and smiled a lot! Path eventually takes you through the mountain tunnel - looks like there is also a wooden path around the mountain side (attached to the side!) If you are brave. Took a good hour to walk back to our starting point at the river (you finish on opposite bank). The river was busy by the time we got back - with lots of people starting the walk upstream, many that were properly dressed and were going to get v wet or were barefoot so wouldnt get far! I think there would normally (non covid times) be other activities there and probably bars or restaurants - but nothing when we were there.
Some advice - if you have little children it would be tricky - not sure I'd have taken mine until 6+ (and mine were v fit and sporty - gymnasts and swimmers). Maybe do part of it - easy enough to turn round if too deep or cold).
We chose to walk the path back which was hard - up and down - but amazing scenery. We are a pretty fit middle aged couple and it was fine for us.

Swimming in the very cold waters of the Acheron Springe was a breathtaking experience. Get there. The walk though the cold waters in the ravine was beautiful.

Amazing trip
Sep 2020 • Solo
Oh what a day, I booked a day trip which, went from the harbour at 10am
We sailed up along the little beaches until we join the river estuary and sailed up into it, taking in the beautiful scenery with swallows, swifts and house martins flying high and low across the river, just taking a dive and skimming the river surface for a well needed drink. It was beautiful to watch as I sat at the front of the boat taking dozens of photos.
We then headed back out to sea and carried on along the coast to a cave where the captain steered the boat into it. A few tourists on the boat dived in and swam in the clear blue water.
I couldn’t resist either and found it refreshing and quiet mentally moving too!
We then headed to a little beach for lunch and swimming, the captain said “ be really for 5pm as we will head back home”.
True to Greek time, the captain returned at 6pm! So typical of Greece!
We entered the port just as the sun was setting, an amazing day enjoyed by all.

Most liked activity of our vacation
Sep 2020
On a hot summerday this is a wonderful activity. Just drive up to the starting point and start walking through the river wearing only bading suit and watershoes. At the start the water is very cold, however going further this gets less extreme. At some points the water is deeper but most of the time there is a possibility to go on without actually having to swim. If you reach the bridge, it is possible to climb onto it and make an extra walk further up over land. This is a really nice activity to do for everyone !

A must if you love an adventure
Sep 2020 • Solo
I went solo as my husband wanted to relax, so I arrived early and there was only one car in the car park. I had my GPS walking map, the necessary wetsuit shoes, water and camera in waterproof bag. After 5 minutes of walking you get to the river and you can either turn left and start wading upstream (which is what I did, but in hindsight I would have been better doing the walk in reverse so you do the river bit going down screen). If you choose to do the latter walk straight across the river and up the hill. I turned left and walked upstream for about 1.8 miles (water calf to knee deep, until the bridge. When you go in, you are gasping with the cold, it is about 7° but soon get used to it. About 4 or 5 times I had to lift my bag above my head as the water went to waist and chest tight, once I had to swim upstream as was out of my depth which was a little bit difficult. When you get to the bridge I climbed up the rocks to the right and found the path which took me background down a series of switchbacks after going up the hill back to the river. When I got back down to the river it was heaving with people and the car park was full so was glad I went early
