This place is amazing! We first went here 12 years ago and have just returned - we thought it couldn't possibly be as good as our memories led us to believe but it really was! You need to be a strong swimmer if you want to get a long way up the river as there are a few deep pools. Take a waterproof bag or no belongings at all - just a swimsuit and water shoes will do - as anything else will hinder your experience. I highly recommend walking as far upstream as you can!

We booked a private taxi (the excellent Dimitris at Taxi Parga.gr) - he arrived on time at 8.30 from our resort in Parga and by 9am we were in the river. The key is to get here v early before the crowds - we had the whole place almost to ourselves and it was incredible. So beautiful and peaceful. We waded up the gorge and had to swim in places which was so exhilarating - the water is exceptionally cold so you have to get through the first 5 mins and then you’ll be ok. We all loved it - including our 8 year old. A unique experience not to be missed but go early - you won’t regret it!

Freezing cold at start but warmer as you go up river. Need water shoes and waterproof bag as little bit of swimming required, great fun though

Google 'Springs of Acheron' for the starting point. It is a very easy walk up the river bed of the Acheron river, starting on a path next to the river, progressing through dry areas interspersed with shallow water, and slowly getting to deeper water.
The gorge narrows and is quite high, making for very nice views and photos.
You can walk up as far as you are comfortable. at some stages the water is too deep to stand and you need to swim a bit, but it is generally still easy going.

You definitely need appropriate footwear! Flip-flops will not do. You can buy cheap water shoes which will work; the stronger the soles the better.

Obviously the time of year and the amount of recent rain will greatly affect water levels.

The water is pretty cold...! :)

Never seen a river like this in all my 40 plus years of travelling in Greece, simply stunning. Go with tough water shoes and walk up the river as its something you'l remember forever and if you get up to the deep pools and swim in that cold cold water you will become eternal... apparently.
& if you dont get that far i guarantee you will have never seen water like it before..... beautiful

To get there just follow the signs to Acheron Springs, if you come from the south turn right just before the Shell petrol station and drive too the large parking at the end (on the way people try to convince you to park earlier and book a tour). From the parking it is a few hundred meters walk and then the path end and you can continue walking through the river. The first 20 meters of so it is extremely cold, but then it is refreshing. Most parts it is not even knee deep, but on certain sports you have to swim some meters. It is about 2 hours until the bridge over the river. A great cool experience. Shortly before there is a difficult crossing over a tree in the water which can be avoided by climbing onto the rocks beside the river and pass the obstruction.

We had a car so drove to the river, believe that you can get a taxi from Parga town.
The river is beautiful. From where we parked the car there was a 10/15 min stroll in the trees alongside the river to a point where you can enter the water and walk down the river within the canyon. BEACH SHOES are a must as it is stones. We also had a waterproof case for the phone/camera as in some places a short swim is needed. Thoroughly enjoyed our experience.
There are a couple of places to eat/drink next to the river.

This is a very popular site during the summer, if you want a lovely walk along a river side this is for you, but be aware the walk can be over very uneven rocky ground, not suitable for wheelchairs, the water pours out of the mountains, it is crystal clear and very very cold, a picnic site is on one side and the walk the other side so make sure you pick the right side at the car park which is free, there are other pay car parks nearby, if you do venture into the water and most people do, wear shoes, the riverbed is quite moveable and not suitable for bare feet. The little tack shops sell shoes for that very reason, toilets are also available at the car park. The drive to the springs is a little off the beaten track but it is well worth the visit.

This place is amazing!…totally jaw dropping. A deep gorge with crystal clear water . I do think we dropped lucky in the fact of hardly any other people being there!… apparently hundreds of people rock up every day in the summer so that would change the experience . We came at the start of June and the water was ok.. I’m very ‘ nesh n I was swimming for nearly two hours . 12 degrees apparently. This place blows some big hitters , real natural wonders that I’ve seen up close, blows em away!…
