A great escape from the August heat
Starting from the Acheron Springs one can walk about 90 min up river and fight off the heat. it's an easy walk, although special shoes are recommended, and suitable for all ages. You should expect to get wet, but can carry a backpack for the day. Best time to go is early morning or after 4pm to avoid large crowds.

    Amazing trip
Oh what a day, I booked a day trip which, went from the harbour at 10am We sailed up along the little beaches until we join the river estuary and sailed up into it, taking in the beautiful scenery with swallows, swifts and house martins flying high and low across the river, just taking a dive and skimming the river surface for a well needed drink. It was beautiful to watch as I sat at the front of the boat taking dozens of photos. We then headed back out to sea and carried on along the coast to a cave where the captain steered the boat into it. A few tourists on the boat dived in and swam in the clear blue water. I couldn’t resist either and found it refreshing and quiet mentally moving too! We then headed to a little beach for lunch and swimming, the captain said “ be really for 5pm as we will head back home”. True to Greek time, the captain returned at 6pm! So typical of Greece! We entered the port just as the sun was setting, an amazing day enjoyed by all.

Enjoyable day out with excellent guide
Went on an organised coach trip from Parga which included a relaxing boat ride at Ammoudia looking for otters, kingfishers etc. We then moved onto a small town called Gliki for a substantial lunch in a lovely restaurant by the river Acheron. A 10 minute ride took us to the entrance to the gorge where we were able to walk upstream in the river. Although extremely cold at first, your feet soon got used to this and it was enjoyable experience. Unfortunately the toilets at the gorge entrance were disgusting and those on the cafe had not been checked for a while. The guide was excellent throughout and we learnt much about the area - history, mythology, geography etc. One advantage was that the coach picked us up from Valtos Beach and others along the main road from Parga. The cost was 50euros pp which bearing in mind the very good lunch we thought was reasonable value. We already had water shoes suitable for pebbly beaches and you could buy them at the gorge. We had bought a waterproof pouch in Parga for our camera.

Having visited Parga in June we read about this place but didn't have time to visit. Returning in September it was a priority, and as we didn't have a car we booked through a local travel agent, €20 each. ( Apollonian travel ?? ) I am so glad we did, I would say it was one of my best days ! The springs are gorgeous.. wear swimwear or anything you don't mind getting wet.. we took a waterproof bag ( as recommended on here ) and put our bits in there .. and wet shoes are a must ! The spring is really cold at first but you get used to it.. deep at times and you have to swim..it was lovely. Thoroughly recommended. The rafting was good ..only €5-7 per person. I did the zip wire, too, which was fun ( €15)
Excellent day our!

As mentioned in other reviews the water is very cold but you soon get used to it. Walking further up there are pools of cooler water where the springs fall down the rocks into the river. We didn't make it all the way because we have a young girl and struggled against the current in some places. It gets easier though after the first swimming part. You definitely need water shoes and a water tight bag.

Stop for a meal or a drink at the bar on the opposite bank on the way back. The prices are reasonable.

One of the best things we did during our holiday in Greece. We liked it so much we went two days running!

The scenery is just amazing.

Beautiful day out with a fantastic experience going up stream on the river by foot and swimming in the deep areas in the fresh water. Recommend to everyone and will be trying the rafting next I go.

Wading through the waters of the Acheron River was one of our favourite activities on our trip. It's even better than the beach on a hot day because you are shaded by the cliffs of the narrow canyon. The water was COLD in June, but the further you wade up the river, the milder it gets. There is a large parking area just down the road east of Glyki. Park here then walk up the trail for a bit before making your way through the water.
This place has ticks multiple boxes: mythological significance, natural beauty, and fun!

Beautiful and unspoilt river, we thoroughly enjoyed walking through it as far as we could go until it got to what looked like neck height and we couldn’t go any further due to our bags! We definitely recommend water shoes and waterproof bags.
Glorious part of nature and we were so lucky to experience it!
