This old church has been converted into a magnificent museum of Christian art after a seven-year closure. The results are nothing short of magnificent. The collection (mostly of Cretan icons) covers a long historical period. The critical and historical explanations are a demonstration of careful...More

The church, near St Minas Cathedral, was dedicated to St Catherine by the Venetians. During the Turkish occupation of Crete it was converted to a mosque. It now holds the Museum of Christian Art - mainly a collection of very fine icons.

This is a Church and Icon Museum not too far from St Minas Cathedral. The building itself is also interesting, having been converted to / from a mosque over time. Worth a look if you're nearby during your travels in the area.

St Catherine icon museum has now re opened. I haven't visited yet - just jumped to the top of my to do list as I went twice when it was closed. A friend has just sent me some photos that look stunning.

The museum is small but it has a lovely collection including icons from the 14th century and works of Damaskinos. The entrance ticket costs 4 euro which I find reasonable (considering that a cold coffee in Heraklion costs approximately 3.5 euro :) ). I personally...More
