Unlike the vast western-style cathedrals of northern Europe, this church feels exactly like a Greek Orthodox parish church simply on a larger scale. The artwork is awe-inspiring. Take a few moments to sit and take it all in. There's a steady procession of people entering...More

This is the main church in Athens and where the archbishop serves. The church looks very large, but it doesn't have very large sitting area. The iconography is magnificent, and tourists continuously visit. We came past during a wedding and it was full of tourists...More

Having been raised in Greek Orthodoxy, I have seen many churches with colorful iconography and carved implements and furniture. But when I walked into this cathedral, I was awe-struck by how much more elaborate everything was. From its construction, to its floor, to its painted...More

Walking along Mitropoleos St. east from Plaka, you can't help but noticing this lovely Cathedral and small square. We walked in to take some pictures and lit a candle in memory of my daughter. What a nice spot to honor her memory.

The Catherdral is the head of all the Greek Othrodox churches around the country. I enjoyed watching pilgrims arrive to pay their homage. The cathedral itself is imposing but beautiful with many relics.

For anyone who likes churches or beautiful ceilings this shouldn't disappoint. The walls and ceilings are stunning, with lovely stained glass windows adding colour. Entry is free.

Inside, this is one of the smallest Cathedrals that I have seen with just 120 seats, but it is beautiful to see, with some lovely plain coloured windows and other intricate features, and a huge coloured dome. Outside, the large square lends itself to the...More

Due to its proximity to the Acropolis, Plaka remains
the area where the majority of foreign visitors stay
and play. Its attractive features include small
squares, some notable museums and the beautiful
Mitropolis cathedral, as well as a host of places to
stay, eat and drink. Its pedestrian zones make it a
pleasant place to escape from the city’s notorious
traffic. Adrianou and Kidathineon Streets contain a
