Every hour you can visit the change of guards during a rather typical and nice "show" of apprx 10 minutes. A typical way of walking and stretching legs, arms, gun...it's a nice ceremony to remember the unknow soldier.

The heart of Athens, the historical center, the place is decoeated with a lovely fountain and has the view to the Parlament. Often people are dancing before the fountain, all people are in a good mood and seems happy; There is also a metro station. Very animated place.

This area has many people but doesn't seem crowded. You will see performers and hear music. People will be selling items. There are cafes and food stalls around. The metro is under here as well, and there is a neat fountain lining the edges of the square as well as a large one in the middle. Right across from the... More

Syntagma Square is the Heart of Athens, and all Athenians are proud of it. A beautiful square with lots of trees to find shade, and right above it the Greek Parliament, a stylish neo-classical building that once was the royal palace. In front of it, the world-famous guards, the Evsones or Tsoliades, with their kilt-style foustanellas keep guard day and... More

On the hour daily (I think) Fascinating, but then I haven't seen anything like this before (and TBH, I wasn't really interested). Would be a great thing to do with the family.

Even if you are coming for just one day, there's no way you can miss Syntagma square. It's the most central square, there you can find the parliament, the most popular shopping road, Ermou, as well as head towards any direction with the transportation means. Very often there are various happenings on the square too.

Quite a large elegant square. In the eastern side is the Greek parliament and the grave of an unknown soldier, guarded by an honor guard (the Evzones). The guard changes every hour, but the most interesting show takes place every Sunday at 11 o'clock. The regiment ov Evzones marches with the military band. In the center of the square is... More

One cannot miss Syntagma Square because right there beats the heart of Athens. There is a big metro station, the Presidential Palace with the famous guards, from there you can take the hop-on-hop-off bus, from there you can walk to the commercial Emou street,or to Plaka district,or to Amalia Gardens,or to Benaki Museum.

The changing of the guard happens every hour - not sure about night time hours, but it is a must see part of taking in Athens. (Don't try to take a selfie with the guards - the sergeant major will stop you)

Staying in Syntagma

Neighbourhood Profile
Syntagma
Perhaps the best place to get your bearings is Syntagma Square, crowned by the imposing Parliament building on its upper side and surrounded by other large structures, such as the exclusive Hotel Grande Bretagne. The grand avenues that lead towards Omonia are also full of massive Neoclassical edifices like the Numismatic Museum and those around smaller Platia Kolokotroni. Here you will find lots of travel agents, bookshops and fashion shops, especially on Ermou Street. Just south of Syntagma Square, you can take a breather in the lush National Gardens, which extend into the grounds of the Zappeio palace and beyond to the ancient Temple of Olympian Zeus.
