Located in the heart of Oporto, the Serralves Foundation boasts a priceless heritage estate, comprised of the Museum (designed by the 1992 Pritzker prize winning architect, Álvaro Siza Vieira); Serralves Villa (a unique example of Art Deco architecture); and by the Park (winner of the “Henry Ford Prize for the Preservation of the Environment” in 1997). As a European cultural institution serving the national community, the Serralves Foundation’s mission is to raise the general public's awareness concerning contemporary art and the environment. Serralves offers a wide range of different eating alternatives, throughout the day –the Restaurant in the Museum, the Auditorium bar or the Tea House in the Park. The Serralves Shop presents a wide selection of Portuguese and international contemporary design products and the Museum Book Shop specialises in publications dedicated to contemporary art. Located in one of Oporto’s most prestigious zones, with excellent access from the historic centre and main thoroughfares, the Serralves Foundation is a unique place in the city - where art and landscape, culture and heritage converge in a contemporary vision. A Must-See for your trip to Oporto!

This museum was recommended by a friend who loved the grounds. The outdoor park, as well as the sculptures are really lovely, but I found the exhibition inside quite boring and amateur.

I have also read all the great things about this property and made it one of our priorities for our Porto visit. The pink art deco building is completely empty inside and you can't go in; this was disappointing. The grounds with the fountains were...More

This place is dedicated to Modern Art solely, so if that is not your cup of tea, beware. Some of the exhibits are excellent, some take a big leap of imagination. However, the place is a lovely space, the gardens quiet, well kept and nice....More

The museum designed by a famous Portuguese Alvaro Vieira. Masterpiece of modern design. Simple in the best way. Set in beautiful garden. All around the garden also. I think building is the main attraction. It manages to be in the background as a perfect place...More

The museum does not impress. If you compare with others in Portugal. The garden is amazing, well maintained and you can enjoy the big old trees and aromatic plants. There is some animals in the park and water features. The restaurant is really good. It...More

So much space. So little good use of it. Absolutely none of the exhibits appealed to me. Boring with a capital "B". Even the gift shop was a snore. And the gardens were just ok. What a waste of half my day. Guess it doesn't...More

Unlike many reviewers here, I enjoyed the museum. I found it an interesting introduction to contemporary artistic thinking in Portugal. I am not a big fan of contemp art in general but it always speaks at least national culture to me. We saw a few...More

Not my taste in modern art. Very pedestrian exhibits. The building is interesting and the park quite beautiful. The home out in the park is quite interesting. Unless you are interested in modern art, even if substandard, skip the museum and enjoy the park and...More

Impressive space set in fantastic location. However, it falls at the first hurdle of the foundation’s own ethos of engaging a wider audience due to a remote location and quite high admission charges and low representation of diversely in the range of artists represented. This...More

On a Sunday afternoon this is a lovely place to visit for a slow pace in a lovely park. The buildings are stunning if you are into modern buildings and work well in the landscape. The gardens are well maintained and give a back drop...More
