A glorious historic place to stay
Oct 2018 • Family
I have visited this 9 centuries old monastery (convent) three times over the years. Built in 1154 by the first queen of Portugal (my wife's 21st great grandmother), it remains a superb historic monument and a special place to stay. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the food is excellent. It will be a different experience.

a must see

When you get here, you must visit the convent (for monks) with its statues and carved altars throughout.

Gardens of the Santa Marinha da Costa Monastery
Sep 2017 • Couples
This extensive gardens, hiking paths, stone step walkways, ponds from another era, is absolutely breathtaking. This was located behind the Pousada Mosteiro de Guimaraes that we stayed in. We decided to take a look after breakfast. The stone steps and sculptures and fountains/ponds are as old as they are beautiful. I believe this is free to everyone as it may be part of the church although on the grounds of the pousada. Many different flowers, trees, and even an orange orchard. Worth the time to investigate. Low on crowds and just so peaceful and beautiful.

Wonderful building, and excellent service
Nov 2016 • Couples
Stayed here for two nights, and the staff were just excellent, the food in the restaurant was really good too. As was breakfast we asked for a pot of tea and it came promptly and was boiling hot, not something that happens everywhere. But what made this Pousada for us was the level of service, they couldn't have done enough for us so helpful.

Like stepping back in time
Jul 2016
From the moment you arrive at this historical building you are immersed in wonderful and interesting sights. The large rooms which you have to pass through to reach the bedrooms are very interesting and are filled with old paintings and furniture. There is a lovely outdoor swimming pool alongside a small cafe. Take the time to explore the gardens they are well laid out.

What a building, and what a view!
Aug 2016 • Couples
We stayed in one of the two suites here, both of which are on the first floor with views out of the front of the Pousada, down over Guimaraes. Great room, everything a little frayed and worn and old fashioned, but really as you would expect staying in a Posada. Perfect! Very comfy bed. The building is really amazing, lots of nooks and crannies and wonderful mix of architecture. Good breakfast buffet, we ordered fresh eggs most mornings without any problem. A 20 minute walk down to town, easier that the walk back up in the sun.

Imposing building, now also serving as a Pousada
Jun 2016 • Solo
A imposing building set on the hillside overlooking Guimaraes with extensive gardens. It now serves as a Pousada though the rooms in these residential/amenity areas still retain many of the features of the convent life ( as well as modern day trappings such as a lovely swimming pool ). The imposing Church is still in use.

Majestic place and view
Oct 2015 • Couples
It's a beautiful place with a magnificent view over Guimaraes. The church is well preserved. The woods in the back are well worth to visit too.

A spare pousada
Jul 2015 • Couples
I liked the convent itself but the new rooms lacked charm. You could choose the old rooms with no wifi or the new rooms with wifi.
The convent feels cold compared to other pousadas. The old world charm of the place is there but there is something missing.
