Beautiful Monument to the Fallen
Feb 2020 • Solo
A very unusual monument in the heart of Praca D'Oliveira in front if the church. It commemorates those who died defending the city from the Muslims in 1340. There is a cross on a sort of gothic style portico. It is a beguiling piece of work actually and I couldn't help but come back to it a few times during my time in Guimaraes.

Historically important and rather impressive ...
Nov 2019
Erected in the 14th century to commemorate the victory in the battle of Salado, this Gothic style sculpted monument sits well in Largo da Oliviera (Olive tree square) as if it was meant to be there. I saw it under heavy falling rain but it was nevertheless impressive.

Historical monument
Oct 2018 • Couples
We came across this lovely monument without immediately realising what it was, thinking it part of the church. It is in front of the Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Church and is quite difficult to distinguish it as being something completely different. However once you realise what it really is then you come to appreciate it for its great historical significance. It is a 14th century monument commemorating the Portuguese victory in the Battle of Salado in 1340, against a Muslim army. This is not something you would go out of your way to visit, however, you really cannot miss it. You will most probably come face to face with it because you are bound to visit this beautiful Square, Largo da Oliveira, to visit its cafes or restaurants or the nice church, or all of the above!

Historic Monument
Apr 2018 • Friends
It's a Gothic monument that sits in a medieval square next to the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. It has a cross and four arches and it commemorates a battle victory. Places to eat and drink around the square as well.

Gothic Shrine Erected Under Afonso IV, Commemorating the 1340 Battle of Salado
May 2017 • Couples
Located within the Largo da Oliveiras Square, just outside of the Igreja da Colegiada de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Church, stands this lovely Gothic Shrine. Construction of the Gothic monument was ordered by Afonso IV to commemorate the Battle of Salado in 1340. A cross stands within this beautiful architectural shrine, one of the many sites within this central historic hub of Guimaraes. Within the Largo da Oliveiras are numerous cafes offering inside and alfresco dining. I would recommend having lunch or a refreshment in this area, to absorb all that this Square has to offer, and to more thoroughly inspect this moving structure.

Interesting small building
Jun 2017 • Friends
This small building is in the historic center of Guimaraes and doesn't need advanced planning to visit it. You can not miss it during your walk - it is located opposite the Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. It was erected in the 14th century on the initiative of Alfonso IV of Portugal to commemorate the victory in the Battle of Salado in 1340.
