Small but friendly

No sun today 😢 so decided to try the museum. Only one euro entrance and a very nice man gave us a private tour with a history of the fish canning plant (better than it sounds). Some excellent old photos to see but you will need the guide unless you can read Portuguese. A very quirky music based exhibition up stairs with some classic album covers. Overall, worth a visit.

Excellent Wee Museum

This was a superb find on a damp and breezy morning. There are 2 main exhibits; the first about the history of sardines that were tinned in the building the museum now occupies; the second about the sardine fishermen who rowed out into the Atlantic to fish, (20 or so fishermen to a boat, 6 or 7 per oar), their families and their living conditions. Both are excellent, with many of the displays in English as well as Portuguese.

In the new section at the back is an auditorium where a film festival is held each year, and some modern art exhibits. Upstairs were a photo history of the fishermen, and an audio exhibit triggered by motion sensors.

Excellent value for €1.20

Sweet museum for small city
Entrance is at the rear by the rail tracks. Building is ancient tin factory. At the front you have a permanent exhibition of the tin trade and fishing trade. They have interactive computer displays in Portuguese that are well made. Then in the new part you have temporary exhibitions. The museum staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. Entrance fee is 1.20euro for adults. I learned some interesting facts by going there.
