Very authentic

Very nice and authentic church. Beautiful wooden ceiling with paintings on it. The church-walls are covered with typical portuguese tiles. (Azulejas)

Very nice and authentic church. Beautiful wooden ceiling with paintings on it. The church-walls are covered with typical portuguese tiles. (Azulejas)

This church who was constructed in the 15th century and who got finished due to allot of transformations into the 18th century, you will find it on the corner of the “Rua de São Pedro”, and when you leave the church and turn to your right and goes uphill, you are just about 200 meters away from the “Museum Frederico... It's a small church with awe-inspiring interior at the same time make you feel peaceful and calm. It closes at 12 pm for lunch and re-opens at 3pm.

There is a fine altar piece and there are lovely old tiles. It is palin on the outside but very lavish inside

A very plain building outside. Every time I have passed by this church the door has been closed, but on this visit my timing was better. The inside is stunning. Worth visiting if you are passing at the right time.

One of the old churches of Funchal. Situated very near the old part of town it is beautiful and very interesting to find out its history.

Like many Madeiran churches, this building lacks architectural excitement from the outside but is lavishly decorated on the inside. Worth popping in if you are going past.

This church is tiled with the most beautiful designs. From the outside it looks like many other churches in the area, quite simple, but inside...wow. I have often been disappointed when visiting churches. This church was a real surprise. The outside is nothing special but within there is a real sense of serenity, there are two interesting side chapels. Whilst the paintings and decoration do not match an Italian, Baroque or Polish church they are lovely. I wish there had been a guidebook in English.

Situated next to the municipal museum and santa Clara convent this is an other example of a Madeira religious monument. Simple exterior, but this place was so wonderful inside - the pictures don't do it any justice. It is very peaceful to make a stop and contemplate. The climb to the roof is well worth it for the wonderful views... More
