Open to the public since 1991, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden occupies an area of 70.000 square meters and houses a huge exotic plant's collection, coming from all over the world, together with swans, duck's and Koi fish. The Monte Palace Museum is an ideal exhibition space nestled within the beautiful surroundings of a tropical garden. There are three floors, two of which are dedicated to sculptures and the third houses a unique mineral collection gathered from the four corners of the world. Monte Palace, also includes one of the most important tile collections in Portugal. The tiles exhibited amidst the tropical vegetation represent several ages, coming from palaces, churches, chapels and private houses throughout the former Portuguese empire. We are open everyday except 25th of December. Our prices are: Adults - 10€ Children younger than 15 years old: Free Entrance as long as they are accompanied by adults. A lovely garden, with a wide variety of plants. It has quirky attractions and water features. We spent a couple of pleasant hours walking around, which can be quite strenuous as there a steep slopes and steps to contend with. There a nice cafe on site where you can get excellent freshly made snacks and drinks. For plant lovers, well... More

We had a rainy few days on Madeira in November. Our hopes that the weather would clear by the time we took the cable car up to Monte didn't come true and we returned down without visiting the Garden in the rain. The following day we returned to visit, as we had purchased entry with our cable car ticket. Although... More

We decided to take the red tour bus to Monte. At 13e each it was easier as we could get on and off near our hotel, it was comfortable and a seat guaranteed. Although you can get a local bus these are often very crowded. The gardens 12e each to visit and probably worth it. However they are on a... More

We visited these gardens on an overcast day but they were fantastic. They are accessible to all and if you struggle with hills, steps etc you can have a tour by golf buggy. It was interesting to find out more about the flora etc we had seen across the island.

These are beautiful gardens that are well worth the visit. There are quite a lot of steps but plenty of places to sit and take in the views and admire the scenery.

The gardens are stunning but it is very expensive to get in. There is also little to keep children occupied and it is not buggy friendly. There are a lot of stairs and the sloped areas are cobbled.

You need to be fit to visit these gardens as they are very hilly. Really well laid out. They must be brilliant in the summer

We took the cable car up to specifically visit these gardens. At this time of year there was no queue for the cable car. The entrance to the gardens are literally across from the exit of the cable car. €12.50 each and we were in. There's a nice café at the top with a great view down the gardens. We... More

Fantastic array of plants and good paths make for great exploring (the map is actually accurate!) I loved the water features and carp. Their orchid garden is stunning, flowering December - may.

I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Monte Palace Tropical Gardens. There were lots of beautiful flowers even in February. There are lots of streams, pools and lakes some of which have large Koi fish in them. Some of the paths are steep and there are cobbles and steps in places so wear sensible footwear. If you make it to the... More
