If you are thinking of something like Kew Gardens then think again, this is almost all outdoors & a much smaller scale. For about £5 it is an enjoyable couple of hours, but nothing more. If you have mobility issues then this may not be...More

We took the cable car from Funchal up to Monte and then across to the Botanical Gardens. All in all an expensive trip at over €30 per person, but well worth the money. The gardens themselves have a breathtaking array of plant species ranging from...More

This is well worth a visit and an extra cable car ride if you like the experience although both gardens can be accessed by road. With superb views over Funchal and exquisite flora and fauna this is the place to spend a lot of time....More

I'm stunned that anyone would not be impressed with this garden. Truly lovely. Well cared for, amazing displays, very reasonable entrance, good cafe and toilets. Find your way using the big display board maps. Paths are not suitable for people who can't walk far.

We always visit the Botanical Gardens when in Funchal. It is the best 5.5 euros visitor attraction. It is currently still recovering from the forest fires but the staff are busily replanting. There are always various plant species in bloom depending on which season you...More

Lovely gardens. We enjoyed the visit. Quite different from Monte Palace. We nearly didn’t go because of bad reviews but so glad we did. More airy and open than Monte. We got a taxi to the gardens then back into Funchal. We spent some time...More

Arrived here by cable car and entered at the top end. Looks a bit boring at the start as plants seem sparse but as you meander down the paths it becomes more interesting. There are huge varieties of plants and flowers and a great cacti...More

Travelled to the Garden in the Cable Car from Monte, which has spectacular views. The whole area is recovering from the massively destructive fire two years ago, including part of the Botanical Garden itself. Lots of evidence of fire damage to trees, and there are...More

We went here as following rides on the two cable cars. I found it quite disappointing as the grounds looked quite bare in places and the paths were quite hard to walk on. There are few signposts and no real directions so we left after...More

Plus of course you can get there and back by cable car although noting it's two separate legs and not cheap but you can do as part of a trip up to the town further inland (forgot the name!)
