birthday trip to Funchal, november, lovely and warm, very warm, we had a hire car and went all over the island, which is amazing, really, good places to eat, nice friendly people plenty of hills to walk up, depending on where you are staying, cable car and tropical gardens are a must see, oh yes the market, good for coffee and trinkets some of the fruit is great but the sales people are persistant so be resolute only get what you absoloutely want and check the price first, by the way the dates were lovely, and the fish restaurants are really good, there is one down in the old town, opposite a couple of indian places which was brill, lovely wine good service and reasonably priced, havew fun and enjoy it

A great visual spectacle but when it comes to the price of the so called local fruit, it’s only short of being daylight robbery. The local supermarket sells excellent fruit at a tenth of the price.

This market is very colourful and beautiful to look at but don’t take your purse out, fruits are 25euros per kilo. You can find the same ones in local shops for a fraction of the price.
The flowers and bulbs are varied and original though.

A small market which I agree is targeting tourists. That said there were some locals and it is very colourful (great for photos) and does have some exotic fruits which you can taste and walkaway. There are two cafés upstairs where the food and drinks we had were good. There is an ice cream parlour at the entrance which sells good ice cream. i bought some spices which I felt were reasonably priced after a quick negotiation.
The fish market was small but offered a differing experience to the market itself.
It is situated on the edge of Funchal, near the cable car and the sea. Watch the restaurants near by as the one we visited was dreadful.

Entirely tourist trap that has few to do with traditional Portuguese markets. Vendors are quite annoying and pushy, I hate that. Moreover, it gets quite unbearably crowded once big bus groups get here. The whole experience was trashy. I did came back later on my own, but the first impression ruined it all for me.

And of course fruit is much more expensive here than any other place. Go to the fruit store across the road, you’ll get a much better deal on fruit over there.

This market is not a locals market, it is purely for tourists to be sold local produce at extortionate prices! If you want to visit, make sure you dont stop and get hoodwinked into buying anything, like we did!

Good to look at. Lovely array of fruit and flowers. Wish I had read the reviews before going though.
We too were swindled by the fruit sellers upstairs (one stall in particular). They were charging 29 € a kg for the Delicious fruit, whereas the next door stall was selling exactly the same fruit at half the price. My advice - do the tastings as offered (it was great to taste the different passion fruit). Then buy elsewhere 😀

We visted the market a couple of times during our trip and found it colourful and fascinating. The fish market, in particular, was amazing and you could walk around and have a good look at the freshly caught fish. The colours of the fruits and herbs and flowers and the arrangements are fantastic. However, be aware of the fruit sellers at the top of the stairs on the first floor. A charming woman took us through various fruits and invited us to try them with little tasters and descriptions. We then bought 2 passion fruit and 1 custard apple and were stung for 16.40 Euros. Too embarassed to quibble. I see that lots of other tourists have suffered the same!
