Conveniently situated near the Town hall this museum was quite extensive. Most of the exhibits were Portuguese, but there were some Flemish. The earliest dated from about 1500 and we loved the wooden pieces and the silver work.

This museum was not cheap to get into at around 8 euro per person. The art is a mixture of silver and gold religious artefacts with some furniture and wood engravings. Whilst the pieces themselves were quite interesting the place was very small and none...More

We saw very interesting art, sculptures,... but sadly there were no descriptions about the background of the exhibitions so we were just able to see them and get an understanding of how old they were but no more

This was around the corner from our hotel. Interesting place but to be honest not a huge amount to see so I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to visit. Mainly religious references, a lot seems to have been originally in the cathedral...More

Very intricate silver work, paintings and statues. Amazed to find such quality on Madeira as worthy of capital city anywhere. Well worth the €5 entrance fee. Couldn't resist taking a photo of seated figures as such a camp pose from one on far right.

This is the most glorious Museum, in an ancient building - with plenty of space to see the exhibits. There are paintings dating from the 1400s, and sculptures covering the same period; the artists are Dutch, Flemish, French - the great painters of religious art....More

Undoubtedly a first class collection of mainly Flemish religious art. The entrance fee is very modest so if you are interested in this type of art, you will consider an hour here an absolute bargain and a gem of a find. If not, you may...More

If you're a fan of religious art (and we are) then this is a rare and unexpected gem tucked in Funchal. There is something quite beautiful in taking religious statuary and painting and making it accessible in a museum environment where you can marvel at...More

We had to climb a lot of stairs to the start of the Museum. We did not see a lift but there must be one. Once on the 1st floor there should not be any trouble with wheel chairs. There would be plenty of space to get a wheel... More
