It all happens from here! This is where you pick up any bus, get the cable car, see public concerts, get pleasure sea trips, buy bus tickets and sit and watch the cruise ships and have snacks. Innovative sculpture is dotted along the route and it is well kept.

Large promenade with nice view on the cruise ships. Plenty of benches to sit on. Lots of food trucks offering all kinds of food.

This once tranquil spot, where you could enjoy a relaxing stroll under the shade of the trees, is now a seething mass of commercialisation. The same can be said for most of Funchal. Once a pretty little town, with several distinguishing landmarks and easy to explore at a leisurely pace; it is now like a throng of rats, racing around... More

I enjoyed the busy atmosphere and architecture of this elegant street in the centre of Funchal. My other half hated it: the traffic fumes were awful.

This boulevard alongside the water has plants, food trucks, nice new pavement and lots of people to watch. Too bad the busy street between the walking boulevard and the cafés and restaurants is disturbing the peace. For us it was to busy and smelling of traffic to sit down and have a drink or meal.

I realize the maderians had to rebuild after the terrible mud slides in 2010 but the sea wall walks are a monument to concrete and don't seem to have had any design or planning some areas have little black and white stone pathways others are cobbles ,red dyed concrete ,tile or planks of re engineered plastic ! or grey concrete... The promenade near the sea (the port is between the sea and the prom) is a nice flat walk. There are bars and restaurants to be found along its length. The restaurants are below you are sea / port level but there are a few bars on the prom selling ice cream and drinks. It's a good place to people... More

Avenida do Mar is a wide boulevard, built, one has to think, not just for traffic, but to accommodate the many parades that Madeirans delight in. Then one part of the boulevard is closed for the parade whilst the other remains open. Ideal for celebrations. We were fortunate to be there when the Avenida was closed for the Carnival Parade,... very nice walk along the shore and marina of Funchal, a little bit too much concrete in some areas; combines the old town with marina and Santa Catarina Park
