The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

Really makes you wonder the views when constructed. The walls inside walls. Seems the only way to lose it is by a siege. The parapet views were worth the money. Standing on the highest was unbelievable.

It seems that this castle has been recently improved as everything looks rather organized. In the vicinity there is also a beautiful cafe on the guards tower (on top of it). Compared to the nearby Pena palace this is a bit less touristic which I liked a lot!

Well worth the effort of taking the long winding path through the woods rather than getting a bus up. The views once you make it onto the ramparts are spectacular

When I arrived to Lisboa I bought Lisboa card for 2 days. I didn't spend Money for Sintra Travelling. It was free to go there. You can take a train to Sintra. When I arrived Sintra I took the bus (nr 434) and paid 5 euros for it. It was an absolutely good deal. I definetly recommend to you.

Bit of a trek up in 40degree heat so took an uber (loads in the area for about £3 to the top). Staff at the ticket office were pretty patronising but hey, end of the season. The modern extensions were very modest and in keeping with the age and style of the castle (discreet wooden buildings). Views are something to... More

Very scenic and well worth visiting. You can drive to the ticket office, where there is free parking on the side of the road. Then it's a small trek of about 500m. We went with a baby but you need to leave the buggy at the castle entrance so recommend taking a sling to carry a baby (if you have... More

The castle is quite well-preserved and would be very atmospheric if not for the sheer volume of tourist traffic! The site is well-cared for by staff and quite well organised, with decent facilities. If you like a challenge, try walking up to the castle from the town (via the wooded paths to stay cool!) we found this a little challenging,... More

The walkways up to the castle are enchanted and feel mystical and magical. Behind every rock is something new to see and the view is great from all sides. The castle is in good shape, the park appears to be wild and untouched but it's really well-kept.

You can walk around most of this castle and take a beautiful track from the castle back to the village. I think the castle is lovely to look up at and down at but it is not necessarily worth the entry fee when you have a family.
