The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

Restoration was well done and the landscaping is impressive. Awesome views from the top of the castle. We were surprised to see the archeological work that was done and the displays of artifacts and old Moorish dwellings.

A ruined castle complex affording great views over the countryside, but even when the wind isn't whipping around some of the battlement walks are for the adventurous. Thankfully the higher points have alternative access but be prepared for quite a bit of climbing to get...More

The castle reflects the two main cultures and religions which dominated the country over periods of hundreds of years. It is built high up on a mountain top partly as defence but later as a location to be cool in hot summers. It is a...More

I enjoyed climbing the stone walls of this ancient fort more than the Great Wall Of China. But anyone with mobility or balance issues should know that the climbs are strenuous and the footing is uneven. I noticed that people with less practical footwear, and...More

The castle of the moors is located at the top of a mountain with great views over Sintra, and also the Portuguese Atlantic coast, the ocean. It worth a visit, but be prepared to walk a lot, take lots of pictures, and pay a pricey...More

Ticket is very expensive and actually there is nothing inside there to see except the walls. Walking around the castle walls offers you nice views over the Sintra village. But that's all do not expect more from the castle

Various tour companies will take you there and then to Pena Palace in Sintra. I am not sure if you can reserve a guide on its website though.
