The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

Sintra is a wonderful town, and this is a great way to get spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The castle itself is also an amazing thing to explore. If heights aren't your thing, a few of the stairs on the walls aren't for you, so go find the ramps that will take you up. Also, if walking from up... More

One of the best ruined castle visits I have ever made but be warned you should be physically fit to take this visit on. We parked our car half way up the hill but still had a serious upward hike to get there. The view from the walls and castle keep are stunning ( it was used as a lookout... More

We walked up to the castle, which was a great way to get there - through the forest and mossy stone pathways. Steep, but well worth it. The castle's resident tortoise shell cat kept us company as we got closer. Amazing views from the towers, and a fantastic walk along the old walls. Definitely worth a visit.

We walked to the castle ruins but you can get a bus, taxi or tuck tuk. Well worth the walk. Superb views but you need a head for heights. I got some great photos of Sintra before the cloud came down. We decided to walk back ( why, I don't know! ) Sintra is touristy but pleasant enough. Wear sensible... More

this is an interesting place, good walk before you reach it; kids will love to walk and climb around (you have to keep an eye on them). the view all the way to Lisbon is great.

This was my second stop in Sintra; I used the 434 bus to get here as I was going to the two palaces as well so I had a full day with lots to do. This is basically an open-air attraction with the old Moorish fort ruins and the whole point is to climb up to the various towers for... More

This is the castle you would draw as a kid when you would draw castles. Amazing structure to wander, but good early and go on a clear day to best the crowds and to appreciate the amazing views.

We got here from the train station using the 434 bus. By combining this ticket with a ticket for entrance to the Pena palace we got a 5% discount when paying at the kiosk. Involves some walking and at times some steep steps, but the views from the castle are fantastic. You can see all over sintra and as far... More

Admittedly you don't have to love Game of Thrones to love the views or the magic of Sintra. But Castelo dos Mouros is a medieval castle that makes you feel like you've walked back in time or into a place in Westeros. Either way it's a perfect hike to work up a good appetite surrounded by history and beautiful nature.... More

Beautiful to see and make pictures with, but depends how much time you have to spend in Sintra.. might be not worth to reach it as they are only walls..
