The sheer size of this palace is just amazing. I believe the church is the only one with SIX full sized old fashioned organs in full working order. I was fortunate enough to hear them all playing on a previous visit, which was an amazing...More

Easily reached by coach from Lisbon (40 minutes from Campo Grande bus station), this royal palace was the summer palace of the Portugal kings until 1910. Really outstanding are the room with hunt trophies, the billiard room and the music room with 2 old pianos...More

This palace and church/cathedral is about 75km from Lisboa and offers spectacular sights. It's huge! Not like Versailles in France, but I did think of it though. The church is for free (there was a wedding when we were there) and the museum next door...More

Visit the little town of Mafra for a very interesting visit to the enormous Palace/Monastery. The scale is mind-blowing. Follow the route round and you will see architecture, furnishings, painting. But for me, the most interesting was the old Infirmary.

The palace is magnificent and definitely worth a visit. We visited it on a day they also had actors reenact lots of the related history. As a result some extra parts were open and we got to see a lot more. It was actually aimed...More
