I sat there with the guy for over an hour hoping to hear some great poetry but instead all I got was silence. I even bought him a wine to warm him up a little bit. I think the language barrier was part of the problem but maybe poets are more introverted than I thought. After I got up a... More

You've got to take a picture sat next to the statue of this prominent poet but only if you happen to walk past. It's not something you'd want to go out of your way to visit. It is by a famous Lisbon Café which specialises in coffee but as we're not coffee fans we didn't bother stopping. Rather expensive too.

Chiado is one of the most important parts of historical Lisbon. Fernando Pessoa is one of the most important Portuguese modern poets. He used to take a coffee right there. If you want to take a coffee with him, just go there and have a photograph with him and...enjoy Chiado!

If you're passing the area then definitely pop by and see this guy. A lovely little secret of Lisbon who you'd easily miss if you weren't looking.

It is fun to have a photo of this famous poet in front of his favourite bar Brasileira-the wonderful old meeting point from 1905 -still a favourite with local People.

This is one of those small unexpected landmarks that somehow become famous and a must-see. Funny watching everyone sitting besides the great poet's statue!

In the Chiado area in Portugal's capital, Lisbon, is one of the most famous statues in the country: the Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa.

ForIt's mostly a photo prop for tourists, which is what we used it as. But it did prompt us to find out who this writer was, so it did its job. As said before it is a vibrant area of the city with musicians and street performers when we were there Saturday.

Staying in Chiado & Carmo

Neighbourhood Profile
Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.
