A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

Everybody does it.
A quick drink in the street at midday.
We thought it touristy and unneeded but came away from Lisbon with it as fond memory.

The treat the driver promised was for real excellent. We had a chocolate cup filled with Ginjinja and an infused sour cherry. It was really special on a rainy, cold day. The old part of the city is quaint and would have been a lot of fun in the sun.

The quickest bar experience but that's kind of the beauty of it! The cherry liqueur shot was tasty. A fun little pit stop when exploring the city!

A must-do establishment in Lisbon serving the famous cherry liqueur in a small cup (including the sour cherries themselves). It's little more than a hole-in-the-wall with a few standing tables outside, but it's cheap, quick, and somewhat moreish.

For someone who doesn't like cherry, the cherry liqueur was surprisingly very nice! Best way to enjoy is to have it mid-day in the sunshine. Centrally located so an easy quick stop. Sadly no chocolate cups to have with it though.

Although it is not really a bar, it finds a place high up among my favorite bars in the whole world!

My partner and I visited while staying close by , we watched the great no reservations program. Staff lovely, friendly atmosphere ( we had another one close to our hotel and it seemed sketchy, full of homeless locals) this one is definitely a nicer environment. Gorgeous cherry 🍒 liquor.

Our tour guide took us here to sample the famous cherry liqueur. We liked it so much, we came back later, had another helping and bought two bottles to take back to England!
Order and pay at the tiny hole in the wall and take your drink outside to enjoy in the square.

I had seen Rick Steves in one of his Lisbon videos going here and I simply loved this tradition. 'A Ginjinha' is a tiny bar opened in 1840, next to Rossio Square. They serve 'Ginja' which is a local favourite sweet cherry liqueur served as a shot. A shot of Ginja costs €1.20, we tried it and liked the taste and experience. When in Lisbon definitely worth going here and trying it.
